I’m not talking about re-masters. I’m talking about albums that have been re-mixed from the multitrack masters.

I’m currently comparing Pearl Jam’s “Ten” with “Ten (Redux)”, re-mixed by Brendan O’Brien.

Even if an album sounds better the second time around, there’s a great deal of cognitive dissonance to get past. Maybe, if you have no experience of the original it could work... like seeing the movie before reading the book.

I'd tend to go for the original. That is, after all, the way the artist intended it. Occasionally, however, a remix might be far superior, as I've heard is the case with Rush's Vapor Trails. I've never experienced a superior remix, though.

If you have no experience of the original, it might be different. I know that I grew up with the 2009 stereo mixes of The Beatles albums, and hearing them in mono, and in the new Giles Martin mixes, was really something. The stereo mixes up until recently have been really odd for those albums, but I never noticed until I heard the other versions. They were THE versions for me.

this is so foreign to me. i'm aware of the rdhd / tkol rmxs and bjork's telegram, which some people swear by, but past that, i didn't realize this was a thing.

my gut reaction is that i wouldn't really want anything to do with such a thing, but... having thunk it o'er, it's an intriguing idea. if the remix was done super well, like to the point that the songs are nearly unrecognizable, i could dig it.

my favorite holly herndon track is a remix she did of one of her own tracks, reinventing it to the point it's really something else entirely, so it's doable.

hm... i haven't really contributed anything with this comment. please throw a rec'r'two my way.

eta: apparently philip glass remixed is a thing, so that's something i have to hear.

eta2: the philip glass rework album is pretty awesome. i couldn't find it in our db (didn't look very hard), but if one of you adds it, lemme know?

This is the only one I can think of that comes close (along with the other 12" remixes of their next two albums), but remixing was just part of what they did, so it was expected and anticipated rather than a novelty or sth similar

My mate never stops telling me this. I need to buy the cd though. Don't want to listen online.

I prefer the original mix to the "Ten Redux" edition. "Ten Redux" sounds cleaner and brings more attention to the guitars but the rather quiet sound of the original "Ten" recording with more focus on the vocals still has it's special charm.

I'm with Romanelli.

Just heard the remixed Some Great Reward by Depeche Mode: What a sack of excrement. That's pretty much been my reaction to every remix I've ever listened to.
