Always cool to see a jazz heavy list and when I do, I look for gems I may have missed. But this skews so heavily avant garde I'm not sure if it's worth exploring for me.

Unfortunately, I haven't changed this since the last time. My decade charts serve as an extension of this one (no repeats from here), and an update would include an influx from those to here an vice versa. It's just seems so cumbersome right now.

Jazzy-wise, been listening to a lot of mid-'90s to recent Anthony Braxton (GTM, FRM), Gunter Sommer, Fred Van Hove, Peter Kowald, Peter Jaquemyn, Joelle Leandre, Marilyn Crispell (esp. '80s' Spirit Music and Gaia), Leroy Jenkins, Joe Maneri, Damon Smith, Barry Guy, and Ned Rothenberg. So a lot of bass - a lot of bass duos.

Otherwise, been listening to a lot of Basic Channel, Maurizio, Moritz von Oswald Trio, late Vladislav Delay, late Autechre, and getting back into Flying Lotus (esp. Los Angeles and You're Dead!). Haven't had the urge to listen to any metal recently, though I saw Toshimaru Nakamura and Tom Carter two nights ago and it was heavier than any metal I've heard outside of maybe Sunn O))) (super excited to see KTL later this year).

I've seen a couple comments about this being too "avant garde" but this chart is still pretty '60s/'70s, formative-years focused and doesn't reflect what can be and is done with instruments today. But either way, I think the important thing to know is that I don't think any of this music intends to repel. These musicians usually explore musical idiosyncrasies to reflect their own idiosyncrasies in thought and feeling. Not everyone thinks or feels in 4/4 or rhyming verse/chorus/verse. Open ears and an open mind. Be excellent to each other. Sometimes it's best to just take it for what it is rather than what you think it should be. Always glad to talk about this music and provide catered recommendation paths via PM.

It seemed avant garde because that's the most recognizable names on there... which influences how aggressively I want to pursue checking out the names I'm not familiar with. And things which may not be technically avant garde are still aggressively unusual or challenging in an avant garde sort of way.

It's also not that I'm anti avant garde. I have a good deal of it in my collection... it's just not something I universally like, like hard bop, post bop, or other subgenres. For instance, I really get into Cecil Taylor, but have yet to have the same overly positive reaction to Albert Ayler or even some of Coltrane's work (A Love Supreme and Blue Train are two of my all time favorites, but they aren't avant garde).I loved seeing Threadgill in there as well. I probably need to spend some time with Braxton.

I'm a huge progressive rock fan, so I'm certainly not wanting a comfort zone of 4/4 time, standard song structures, or typical instrumentation and sounds. If I'm accused of not having an open mind, its because I tend to discount simple, standard, or typical music in favor of exploration and experimentation.

That was less direct and more a general yelling at the cloud, because the sentiment is common. I'm aware your tastes are very much you. If you dig Cecil, you might try Van Hove; I wouldn't go with Church Organ, but maybe Flux or The Corner. Crispell is also a Taylor disciple, I think you'd like Spirit Music. But if I had to give you one suggestion from here, it would be Matthew Shipp's Multiplication Table.

I'm already a Shipp fan, so that's another point of overlap. Thinks for the other focused recs. I'll put 'em in the queue.

Oh wow, didn't know that was your #1 (if numbers matter to your chart).

I still remember listening to it on a walk. It tripped my mind when I was in a hotel. It like morphed reality from nice square lines I was looking at to a moving organism... the walk ended up near a swamp in Florida and it was interesting experience I won't forget. Thanks to your rec.

I didn't feel it was "too avant-garde" rather pushing the boundaries on what an instrument can do and it was fantastic. I'm curious how I can get that mindset with other more challenging music. I flip the bozo bit pretty quick sometimes.
