Probably backing a loser here, but for real 'Roaches' is the best rap song of last year.

They're not actually as different as you think, heavily mournful requiem-like compositions on the subject of family (and, of course, loss). It's definitely interesting seeing Monroe go with a heavy string arrangement to complement here usually sinewy, straightforward songwriting, one that really gives her voice room to shine and reach levels heretitho unseen... but I just can't put my finger on it, something's missing that keeps it from truly being great, despite how personal and deeply sorrowful it is. Roaches on the other hand is a bit more musically spare, heavy on the dingy atmosphere and the almost serpentine (and nearly flawless) flow of Maxo Kream, and each listen just seems to reveal more and more, it really does feel like a complex, fully formed sensory-heavy short story than just a punchy hip-hop song. It's probalby facing an uphill battle here, but my second favorite of the Totally Lit bracket (next to "Romance", ofc) and still an easy vote here.

Both tracks are really good and I need to check out a full-length by each artist. Narrow vote to Roaches.

Skinny, to finally answer your question of why I like Twofifteen better. Both have great beats, flows, and lyrics in general. However, this part of the hook is the weirdest, most off-putting element of Roaches. I mean, it's a common sentiment, but what are you doing saying that on an album that features Trippie Redd? Laughing

I think that sentiment, coming as it does from somebody who makes contemporary trap and spits over Wiley beats, is endearing. If Jay-Z said it, I'd cringe. But as I said in the previous matchup, Maxo somehow manages to be a modernist and a traditionalist without it feeling forced, which is a difficult - to the point of almost never happing - trick to pull off successfully.

Did you just give Hip Hop underdog status against... Country?! And a relatively unknown artist at that? Very good move regardless!!! lol.

I'll have to come back to this match later tonight.

Apparently so. That said, this song isn't my thing.
