Fischman wrote: | I thought this was one of the groups I’d never heard. But then upon hearing the first song, they sounded a little familiar. Then of course it all became clear on the second cut, which was a big hit where I lived back in the day.
I never explored further because I figured it would be one of those groups where I liked a single but wouldn’t care for the whole album.
I was wrong. Thanks for listing this. Interesting compositions, cool groove, laid back but plaintive and engaging vibe. And really, really nice vocals. I’m smitten.
I’m gonna’ give this an 80, which puts it in a tie for first place with Swagger and just ahead of Palomine. Tough call. In the end, I’m voting for this one – those vocals are just too sweet not to. |
Thx Fischman because you're expressing my view on this album perfectly. I'm also glad that there's a bit of variety in the voting and certainly also that there is a lot of love for this album.

Well good I didn't really have an idea what the album did apart from Holland, Belgium and Germany.

I voted for Bakesale myself so as far as I'm concerned there is now a tie between Bakesale, The Ideal Crash, The Sundays and Palomine and I wouldn't mind if another of those albums would get a second (or first) vote as well....

Sorry, I haven't said anything yet. I was already familiar with half, and I need to listen to the other half. Here's the rankings as of right now. I just listened to Eroica, which I wish would've have leaned into the funk a bit more.
Flip Your Wig
Bakesale
The Ideal Crash
Blue Sky Mining
Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic
Eroica
I'll try to get the others done in the next week.

Made a playlist of the full album in the correct track order if anyone needs this to hear Eroica: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P...kRqKjPBRo2
I really enjoyed it. You can hear the sonic connection to Prince And The Revolution, but their vocals are better (unpopular opinion alert). Well-crafted pop rock. Now I just need to listen to the dEUS album and then I can make my choice. _________________ Add me on RYM

I voted for Swagger by The Blue Aeroplanes. I thought this was a great album. Although I listened to all of these albums, including the other three albums, and if Ascension by The Aints was an option that would have got my vote. Bakesale by Sebadoh was the only album I know I had heard before but I think I may have listened to The Sundays when it came out. If so I didn't appreciate it then like I can now, being more into grunge, shoegaze, etc at that time. I should have listened to Calenture by The Triffids before now. They were one of the first local bands I saw live in the late 80's and I love Trick Of The Light. When it comes to Husker Du Candy Apple Grey is my favourite. I really enjoyed listening to most of these albums and this is how I would rank them.
Ascension by The Aints
Swagger by The Blue Aeroplanes
TC Matic by TC Matic
Bakesale by Sebadoh
People Are Like Seasons by Sophie
Calenture by The Triffids
Palomine by Bettie Serveert
The Ideal Crash by dEUS
Flip Your Wig by Husker Du
Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic by The Sundays
White Soul by Green
Blue Sky Mining by Midnight Oil
Eroica by Wendy & Lisa

Hi Purplepash I'm delighted you didn't make the obvious choice with Swagger but even more delighted that you liked the albums I wasn't able to show because not widely available. Especially that I could sell The Aints to an Australian

Can't say I was the biggest fan of The Ideal Crash. Very well-made, tasteful art/alt-rock with vocals that failed to spark much interest or emotion in me, and songwriting that while solid was at times nondescript. Somewhat reminiscent of Radiohead on certain tracks.
~~~~~
And now it's time for my final ranking:
1. Calenture by The Triffids 4/5
2. Reading, Writing And Arithmetic by The Sundays 4/5
3. Bakesale by Sebadoh 3.5/5
4. Flip Your Wig by Hüsker Dü 3.5/5
5. Eroica by Wendy & Lisa 3.5/5
6. White Soul by Green 3.5/5
7. Palomine by Bettie Serveert 3.5/5
8. Swagger by The Blue Aeroplanes 3/5
9. The Ideal Crash by dEUS 3/5
10. Blue Sky Mining by Midnight Oil 2.5/5
An upset win for The Triffids, who narrowly won my vote away from The Sundays. Great selection dihansse! _________________ Add me on RYM
Thx Baystate, even more possibilities for a tie on different albums and interesting to see that different albums are lovend by different people.
