An interesting chart indeed.

There are obvious nods to Scaruffi, but then within my own chart there are numerous albums which I only learned about from him. Some such albums – like This Timeless Turning (not to mention predecessor A Return to the Inner Experience and follow-up Moonbathing on Sleeping Leaves), Field Recordings from the Sun, Joy Shapes, Love Agenda, Robin Holcomb’s two early 1990s masterpieces (I was never sure which to include in my own Top 100) and Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful (which features Television’s Billy Ficca) – are not so well-appreciated on this site as I feel they could be.

Nonetheless, I have never really believed every rating Scaruffi made. For instance although they are not bad records I have never felt that two of his all-time favourites, The Velvet Underground and Nico and Rock Bottom, are nearly as good as he says. Like Linda Perhacs’ Parallelograms, Visions of the Country was dismissed by Scaruffi, but it gets a lot of praise here. More than this, I appreciate the similarity with my own chart in how it incorporates – though not slavishly – influences from one critic with a person’s own experiences.
