Still got the other album to listen to but Jenny Wilson's Exorcism is an excellent album. I'm curious because this might become a hard match up for the play ins and reading the description Skinny gave for his album I am somewhat excited to listen to his album.

So I recently finished both albums from this bracket. And while I do enjoy both albums equally as being excellent records, I got to give it to Insula. I think Skinny might have mentioned this for this album, but there are a lot of video game samples. I mean I got quite giddy when I hear those sound effects from Earthbound. And there are plenty of others. So yeah, that record won my vote.

Andrew Hannah wrote: | EXORCISM - out 20 April - details Wilson's life following her experiencing a horrific sexual assault not long after recovering from treatment for breast cancer.
The very definition of a personal record, EXORCISM deals with this traumatic ordeal with breathtaking candour, great beauty and strength of which I have almost no comprehension. Once you hear the lyrics to lead single "RAPIN*" it's frankly incredible that Jenny Wilson found the inner resolve to make what could prove to be a career-defining record.
"Been dancin' / at a club / out of town / beat me up / take me down / did you pick me 'cos there's no one else around?" These are the opening lines of the song, and as it progresses the experience only continues to get more upsetting, more horrifying. "RAPIN*" is an extremely harrowing listen, so we do advise of the distressing nature. Wilson has released a statement to go along with the video, so other than expressing our admiration for the Swede's strength in adversity we will give our voice to a survivor:
"This is the most difficult thing I’ve ever done.
In so many ways.
At first, I actually didn’t know if I even wanted to go on with music anymore.
Then, something terrible happened to me.
I ended up at a crossroads.
Either silent - or speaking.
It was not an easy choice.
I didn’t want to talk.
I didn’t manage to talk.
But I had to talk.
Not to bring justice or to take revenge.
Nothing is ever as easy as it seems.
I wanted to take back what I’d lost.
I had to get rid of what was hurting me." |

Before you vote, take a read the articles posted and consider the context (and subtext) of the material on the synth-laden art pop record. It’s powerful. Really impressive stuff.

Neither one's grabbed me musically, so I'm just taking Prok's fun over yet another gutwrenchingly personal album.
Yes, Wilson's back story Is also gutwrenching and i heartily applaud her survivorship, coming out the other side with her voice intact. When I choose albums, part of my criteria is how often do I want to listen to it. Schindler's List was a great movie and I'm richer for having seen it, but I never felt the need to watch it a second time.
The music is the music. Back stories are American Idol fodder.

Context, Subtext, and "Stories" are half of music. Music is more than just sounds on a plate. But fair enough if its not really your thing.

I dont know about the proportion. For me, I certainly wouldnt say half . A great piece of music can stand on its own.
Which isn't to say that stories cant be an integral part. My only point was that (and to be perfectly clear, speaking only for myself) there are some stories I'm more inclined to want to hear multiple times.

Don't worry, I'll let you know the Context, Subtext, and 'Stories" of Insula at some point. They're more interesting than that other album's, and matter both more and way, way less. But also, it just sounds better. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
