If in the main an extremely routine chart, there are two notable surprises:
1) Loose, which was a fine work by one of the most out-of-time (and not politically correct) but most talented Bush Senior Era singer/songwriters. Loose does not, however to my mind match Victoria’s first two albums, Happy Come Home and especially Swing the Statue, which recall the “freak folk” of the middle 2000s at a time when what these records stood for was entirely unfashionable.
2) Joy of Cooking, whilst not holding a candle to Swing the Statue, is an impressive pop album that whilst considered “feminist” is actually much more focused (as the name implied) on the joys of daily existence. This focus powerfully resembles Victoria Williams or her contemporary Robin Holcomb – you should check out her two early 1990s masterpieces Robin Holcomb and Rockabye if you have not.
Aside from those two, I can give kudos for Chronic Town, which is a great first-up effort seldom discussed when R.E.M. are mentioned, and Court and Spark, which whilst no Hejira may be better than I first heard it as on a recent listen to ‘Free Man in Paris’.
