My (stupid) bad (move), unfortunately, I haven't heard Universal Consciousness, so I'm gonna hear it in a little while Laughing
Along with the other albums, 'cause they're good.

Good point of view. But in contrast to you guys, I'm not that into Jazz as much (haven't listened to many albums outside, so I most obviously could change opinion). Let alone know as much about the genre as you. I hope you don't take my opinion for granted. And I didn't really call it to a serious jazz fan, I stated it on the "Album of the day" post of the site.
Oh and I mistaked Sextant with Head Hunters. That means I haven't heard Sextant either. Sorry. If you have more recommendations, please feel free to share Very Happy !
If I advice you to anything to take away from my original comment, it is a call from a guy who wants to get more into Jazz, and a serious Jazz fan must know where to go, ya know?
Until then, what makes these records stand up as great as the amusement, experimentation, grandiosity of the album whose post we're discussing under rn??

Head hunters, sextant and thrust are all wonderful.

*writes "Herbie Hancock - Thrust" on the Jazz albums to check out note.*

Glad you could get two new albums to try from this discussion Very Happy

I don’t consider myself a “serious jazz fan,” and don’t feel like I have the knowledge to adequately compare those five to Bitches Brew, but there are definitely some folks on BEA who fit the description. Perhaps they could give you more post-1970 recs.

That's what makes BEA so great, instead of lash out on an opinion, you are being invited to different perspective and new music.

Regarding the other serious Jazz fans on BEA, any specific names?

Gotta' add Crossings and Mwandishi to that list. Herbie really went on a tear there for a while.

While I would take issue with #1, that's still an excellent chart for its intended purpose.

I consider myself a serious jazz fan. Consuming jazz has consumed me for at least five solid years now.

That said, like most fans of anything, I have my points of departure from the standard assessments that populate the genre. There are certain highly acclaimed and/or popular albums I don't rank that highly. Bitches Brew is one of 'em. Which isn't to say I don't think it's a great album... it's just not as great as its reputation IMO.

I would put most of Miles' albums from '67 - '75 ahead of it.

My list of post-'70 albums by any artist I would rank ahead of it would be extensive enough that nobody would want to read the whole thing here. Despite not being a self-proclaimed jazz devotee like myself, I thought BayState did a great job of presenting the most valid examples.
