NOTE: I will be adding another category or two later tonight or maybe tomorrow (while still gradually building all previous ones). I will continue to go through and ask "criteria related questions" regarding recommendations I am unfamiliar with but I also want to say that it is by no means being "required" that these are answered when giving me recommendations. And it is not even "required" that you answer them if you don't want to. Your recommendation is still well received and counts just the same. Fwiw...

The advantage of answering those questions is only that it more precisely gives an idea of where I should rank those entries if you want me to add them to these lists BEFORE I get around to listening to them. But if not, or that doesn't matter to you, it's not a big deal.

Just added 3 more categories...

Starting to add entries for Sax, Trumpet and Keyboards. Tons of room for recs as I do my best to recall the best ones and build these up. Im also open to recs or discussion about ranking changes, why you feel some other performance deserves over another, etc (for any of the lists).

Thanks, roughly 1/2 are familiar (not all rated/ranked though) or at least I've listened at some point (some years ago), but several also that I need to check out at some point. And yes, thanks for reminding me of Fluxations. Added Smile

Many musicians worth being held in high regard are done so for their arcs, not a discrete point along them. For instance, Blonk is worth considering for expanding the vocalist's vocabulary with extended techniques rarely heard elsewhere, developing blank dialects using existing languages, and utilizing clever compositional techniques from color-and shape-based games to dadaist texts, among other things, not least of which is a simply entertaining and tragicomically theatrical performance style. These facets are not present on just one record, and the latter cannot even be heard. If you let me know who you're not familiar with, I can narrow it down though.

I don't disagree. Blonk sounds like a fascinating vocalist that I'm not sure if I've heard before. You are welcome to mention artists alone but what I am listing and ranking here are the best album performances by the best musicians. This is at least as useful for those interested in listening and starting with the best examples (imo). I'm short on time to look through all those artists and their best albums and find out which I'm missing but feel free to rec anything missing from the lists here. At worst it will be a reminder to add Smile

The actual compiled (in progress) lists are on the first post, first page of this thread just in case you missed it and thought this was a recommendations thread only.

Any room for Roky Erickson? Or does this list not stop at the 13th floor? Smile

Hmmmm, good pun, good thought Smile He might need a place on one (more?) of these. Are you thinking with vocals ... keyboards ... guitar ... all of the above?

I was just thinking vocals for Roky (Stacy Sutherland was lead guitar and Tommy Hall did the amplified jug/guru-ship).

Right on, I will have to revisit "Psychedelic Sounds of..." in particular. He has a good shot.
