Even with just one common album and two common artists with my own chart, on one level I really like this chart because it is so different from virtually anything I have seen here.

I am familiar with some of these albums from Scaruffi or a small number of intrepid writers on Rate Your Music (‘SellMeAGod’ being the chief example) and with chart #1 All The Pretty Little Horses from David Keenan’s 2003 The Best Albums Ever...Honest. There are also a small number common on “best albums” charts (Blonde, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, Ágætis Byrjun, For Emma, Forever Ago) it is fascinating to see such a large number of interesting albums from outside the Anglophone world. More than that, the descriptions are interesting enough to make me seriously think about trying out many of the albums I have never heard of and listening to those that I have heard of but never taken the time to listen to.

On the debit side, the list does seem to focus far too much on contemporary music, and whilst I am suspicious of avoiding music from recent decades entirely, I am even more suspicious of avoiding artists who may have clearly influence albums like Hospice and For Emma, Forever Ago – although I am not sufficiently certain to name names nor possess desire to do that. Writers like Scaruffi – and even Harrington or Keenan – give me so much doubt of the importance of any generic “alternative” band after the middle 1980s that I read suspicion when I see such albums on a list.

So, a list with very marked positives and negatives, but still I would say worth attention. What makes a great chart is having a different perspective from previous critics, and even with marked flaws this chart does meet that basic requirement.
