Fantastic List!
In addition to some most excellent, but fairly standard choices (e.g. Love Supreme), there's lots of very cool less than obvious gems. I loved seeing these not-ofte (or never) listed items:

9. Mothership Connection by Parliament (1975)
10. Just The Facts And Pass The Bucket by Henry Threadgill Sextet (1983)
27. Maggot Brain by Funkadelic (1971)
36. Stone Crazy! by Buddy Guy (1981)
69. Midnight Blue by Kenny Burrell (1963)

71. Straight Life by Freddie Hubbard (1971)
72. Expansions by McCoy Tyner (1968)
74. The Köln Concert by Keith Jarrett (1975)
76. Ellington Uptown by Duke Ellington & His Orchestra (1952)
78. Unrest by Henry Cow (1974)
84. Live by Bill Frisell / Kermit Driscoll / Joey Baron (1995)
86. House Party by Jimmy Smith (1958)
89. One Step Beyond by Jackie McLean (1963)

I've reviewed a number of your jazz choices in my jazz diary and spotted a couple more that I'm adding to my future listening list for said diary.

Good stuff there!

Although there are a few points of interest regarding the earliest recordings on this list, I cannot agree that Mothership Connection, Maggot Brain, and even Unrest are “very cool” or “less than obvious” or “not-ofte (or never-) listed items”.

I do have both those artists (I count Parliament and Funkadelic as one artist because the personnel are related) in my own chart, and have known of them from Joe S. Harrington, David Keenan and Piero Scaruffi (respectively) for many years now.

Aside from that, there are some interesting selections with which I am unfamiliar even up the artist level, like Just the Facts and Pass the Bucket, Soulville, Stone Crazy!, Evolution, Talking About, House Party, Dogon A.D. and four of the five from #96 to #100. It is also interesting to see The Meters in an all-time best-of as I have never done so before.

Not everyone reads Scaruffi. Unrest isn't even in the top 7k here, so I'd say that definitely counts as less obvious.

Why wouldn't you agree that those albums are very cool?? George Clinton is cool as hell.

-----

Anyway, great chart! It would be perfect if it had more twenty-first century albums (I see only one).

Mothership Connection is fairly well known, but not many folks would put it all the way up in the top 10, especially in an overall chart. Henry Cow is pretty much unknown outside devotees of art rock or prog. Even on this site, he may show up on 35 charts, but they're almost all year or decade charts... very few overall charts.

Meanwhile, Evolution is widely considered one if the all time great seminal groundbreaking jazz albums. It may not be on a lot of charts on this site, but in the bigger world, it is a frequent lister that gets plenty of rep.

As regarding the first point, Mothership Connection was #6 in ‘Joe S. Harrington’s Top 100 Albums’ on the webzine Blastitude back in 2003, so the idea of it being an all-time Top 10 album is less novel to me than even the albums in the Best Ever Albums or Rate Your Music or Acclaimed Music all-time Top 10s which I wholly ignore when looking at what album I should listen to.

I had a look and did find two other member all-time charts with Mothership Connection in the top ten, so finding it there is not that odd compared to other personal charts with which I have been familiar for the past decade and a half. Maggot Brain – of which I substantially agree with Harrington’s opinion that it is “marred by aimless jams” – is no different.

I will agree that Henry Cow is not well known outside of those who have read Scaruffi or devotees of art rock or prog. I saw Unrest on only two other all-time charts on this site, so I should be cautious about any album primarily known to those reading Scaruffi. I might go so far as for it to be a piece of blindness on my part given two later albums by them and the Art Bears on my own chart – and two is all I allow for bands as related as those.
