On one level, this is a fairly typical chart.

On another level, this reminds me somewhat of the first chart that got me into music beyond the restrictive confines of outer suburban Melbourne – Joe S. Harrington’s Top 100 Albums, written on the webzine Blastitude between 2001 and 2003. Too often – I will confess – I compare charts with what I saw in that list, and this chart has no fewer than twelve albums in common: Fun House, Radio City, Trout Mask Replica, Pink Flag, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, The Velvet Underground and Nico, Ramones, Pet Sounds, Blank Generation, New York Dolls, The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter, and The Modern Lovers. It also has The Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, David Bowie, Neil Young, Parliament/Funkadelic, Frank Zappa/The Mothers of Invention and Black Sabbath shared with the Harrington list.

There is also much similarity with another significant list for me – David Keenan’s The Best Albums Ever...Honest from 2003 in Scotland ’s Sunday Herald, for which the same comparison issue exists as with the Harrington list if to a lesser degree. Both this chart and The Best Albums Ever...Honest contain Fun House, Fear of a Black Planet, Trout Mask Replica, Maggot Brain, The Velvet Underground and Nico, Blackheart Man, I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight, Tilt, The Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter, The Perfect Prescription, Big Star, the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, the Kinks, Miles Davis, Brian Eno, Leonard Cohen, Black Sabbath, the Beach Boys and Pere Ubu.

Like the Harrington and Keenan lists, a younger reader might note this chart including Sabbath yet none of the seminal 1980s or 1990s metal artists.

Whilst I maintain a lot of respect for Harrington and Keenan and they both certainly affected my musical direction, the problem with this chart is that almost all of the albums in common are too familiar to readers who have read only lists from popular magazines. Choices from those two lists that a casual reader of rock criticism will have never heard of are few. Moreover, of the remaining choices, there are only a handful of genuine “wildcards”. The Last Poets, the Bonzo Dog Band's Tadpoles and to a smaller extent Babes in Toyland’s Spanking Machine or Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads comprise the most unexpected picks here.

Aside from the similarities with earlier charts, this is quite a varied chart with a good balance of eras in it.

Thank you to mianfei for giving such a detailed assessment of my Top 100 chart.

I come from a British pop/rock culture. When I was itching to explore classic pop/rock twenty years ago I used the AllMusic guide, so a lot of US acts got absorbed.

I haven't heard of the critics you mention. I don't consider myself to have a wide knowledge of music or music journalism. I am also aware, from exposure to classical music, that my tastes are quite primitive.

At the moment I am making more of an effort to listen to new releases, particularly female artists, e.g. Aldous Harding, Mitski, Jessica Pratt, Hayley Henderickx, as well as more classic pop, rock and jazz. It's funny you should mention metal, as I've never been a fan. I tried Metallica and Slayer, but didn't click with them, but last year heard Mastodon for the first time and was quite drawn to that.

Peace to all - Deeds

I gave a rating and a comment, but I just wanted to add that some of my favorites are on this list, it really is a great top 100. I guess one could say that you have a preferred genre (I certainly do), but there's also a ton of variety (which is not something I can confidently say about my list).

I would also definitely recommend Mitski, she's one of my favorites. Hope you like her!
