File Under: Movies, Hit Song Parody of "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor
Music Video: no
Best lyric:
"Fat and weak, what a disgrace
Guess the champ got too lazy"
Amazingly, their are nearing 13 Rocky universe movies as we speak. And, in the last Creed installment, Rocky actually does own a restaurant, so Al kind of predicted the way the series was going to go. It's not that funny, but it is impressive that the hook works as well as it does.
Best lyric:
"See severed heads that almost fall right in your lap
See that bloody hatchet coming right at you
No, you'll never see hideous effects like these again
Till we bring you "Nature Trail to Hell--Part 2."
So bring the kids along, it's good clean family fun!"
While the last three songs don't really do much for me, the final track on the album is awesome for a lot of reasons that I could list ad nauseam, but I think it's just one to listen to and enjoy. It's musically interesting and creative, the lyrics are hilarious, and satirically on point, and there is even some backmasking on the track. That's right, at about 3:40 you can hear what is a clearly backwards message being said, which, when it is played backwards reveals that "Satan eats cheese whiz". Never change Al.
Best Song(s): "Nature Trail To Hell", "Polkas on 45"
Album Rating: B
There are some great deep tracks to be found here, and "Eat It" is obviously one of Al's best known tracks, but there's also 3 or 4 middling songs that I never return to on this album, so a B seems like an appropriate score to me.
Best lyric:
"Picking teams, he would always be last
He couldn't run very far, he couldn't think very fast
If he was on your side, you'd always lose
That guy had a problem, even tying his shoes"
A song about a dude who's a complete loser, but everyone likes him, because he can dance. It's a fun little song, but it's ultimately not very memorable.
Nature Trail To Hell kind of shows that Zappa-esque energy Al has always had buried underneath his apt parodies, kind of makes you wonder about the potential he had for a non-parody artist.
This song is about a man that has a booger stuck on his finger. At age 10 I thought it was just about one of the funniest damn things that I had ever heard. And now that I'm 24, it's still pretty damn funny. The disco jam is pretty killer, and Al's accordion playing is on point.
Sorry, I haven't gone on to Dare to Be Stupid yet; you know, Corona, and all, but I think I'm going to get to it soon.
Gowi, the Zappaness is something that as I've grown older I've really come to appreciate. However, Genius in France doesn't come along for quite a while.
Best lyric: "Ohhhhh, my patient died, before they could pay."
I meant soon as in very soon. Here we have the first track from Weird Al's third album, and album that sees him continuing to make hits for MTV, but the album is not nearly as well received as the previous. Madonna is a logical next stepping stone for Al to parody after he took down the king of pop; he definitely delivers. "Like A Surgeon" is an absolutely classic video and a great song. There's not much else to say except watch, listen, and enjoy.
Song Rating: A-
Music Video: A+
Best music video moment: 3:35 to the end of the video. SEXY AL
