My favorite song of the decade is in a duel against THE song of the decade. According to the ranking of RYM, Runaway is the single # 1 of the decade 2010. It's a very good song that I really like.
But,
With Christmas Unicorn, Sufjan Stevens created an Electronic-Indie-Folk-Progressive-Pop-Christmas song that turns around 6:15 into a magnificent crescendo taking up, with voices in heart and in canon, the superb refrain of one of the best songs in history (!) A magnificent tour de force which makes this song one of my favorites among all.
Christmas Unicorn is unlikely to win against Runaway, but it has already won my heart.
My favorite song of the decade is Sufjan's "Impossible Soul," which I wasn't going to nominate for this tourney because it's 26 minutes long. But "The Christmas Unicorn" is very similar to that one in the way it starts off quite and then bursts open into a repetitive chorus. I was still going to go Runaway until it hit the familiar refrain that Exist-en-ciel mentioned, at which point I decided to go Sufjan. Really great song, Runaway is overrated anyway. _________________ And it's hard to be a human being. And it's harder as anything else.
Yeah. Of all the Sufjan songs to pick from, this is a really strange choice. I play it a bunch every September and think it's a great Xmas song, but think I need to go with Kanye here. _________________ http://jonnyleather.com
I'm not really into Sufjan and was all set to vote for Runaway, a great Kanye song, but I had never heard The Christmas Unicorn before, and it totally took me by surprise how much I enjoyed this by the end. It ended up getting my vote.
