- Post subject: Greatest Hits albums
|
Hey all - new to the site so this might have already been discussed... but what about allowing the ability to rank the greatest Greatest Hits/Compilations/Live Albums/Boxed Sets or things of that nature. I know it might mess up the rankings to do this, but maybe as something seperate from the overall rankings? There were several important compilations that don't really qualify as "albums" to me but are hugely influential in the history of rock and roll, especially a lot of '50s stuff back before the album became an artistic statement circa Pet Sounds/Sgt. Pepper.
As far as live albums, I think of things like It's Too Late to Stop Now by Van Morrison or Rear View Mirror by Townes Van Zandt that rank higher to me more than any proper album made by the artist.
The possibilities seem almost endless, but I'm just throwing this out there as a discussion on whether it makes sense to categorize different types of albums. Might be fun at worst!

Welcome EveryCheapHood
I agree with you about the live vs studio statement.
There are many bands that have o.k. studio albums but awesome live albums.
The first one that comes to mind is the band Head East. _________________ .

I think a tagging system is going to be in place in the future somewhere (albummmaster?) which might allow people to view compilations/EPs/live/soundtracks as a list.

I think in future we'll be able to 'tag' albums, so you could see charts just with compilations or just with boxed sets, etc. But they'll all most likely stay in the overall chart.

yes, that's the direction the site is headed in. Tagging is top of the list for 2012.

Out of interest, do we have a due date for the 'decades charts'? Cause they're really exciting

very soon. It's being tested at the moment, so as soon as it's ready for wider release it'll be pushed out to everybody. It's a big change to the site and I don't want to introduce any problems, so I'm taking a cautious approach (it will difficult to roll back once the change has been implemented).
