Post subject: What is the lamest artist you freely admit you adore?
I know cool factor can be rather subjective, but I was talking about my father's musical taste recently and came to the realization that we all have those things that seem less particularly interesting and sometimes leans toward peer mockery. I'm not talking about "cool to hate" bands, but things more universal as much as we can discern. For example, my dad genuinely loves Country Joe & the Fish and my understanding is of the movement in the 60s it's not a band we look back at as being very hip or interesting.
For my own taste, I genuinely love Crash Test Dummies.
Yeah, the mmm mmm mmm guys. The baritone Counting Crows, if you will.
My love for U2 is often pretty lame. Like I love them even when I know I shouldn't. Like Pop genuinely is a fantastic piece of art for me. Death of his mom. Wake up Dead Man. PLEASE - holy shit PLEASE... and just how dark it is... plus PopMart was the greatest slam on society I've seen put to art in a long time/recent memory/ever? Even U2 won't remaster it... hahaha. They've talked about re-recording it, but we all know that's just an artists way of saying either I want to go back to that time or a really nice way of saying it's shit. Dave Grohl wants to re-record his first major release (not pocketwatch/late stuff, but self titled).
Gloria Estafan's Christmas album... probably the most cringe-worthy love of mine. Memories and the such.
Uh... for BEA forum standards, basically everything on my charts... hahaha.
This is a great thread idea. Unfortunately, the vast, vast majority of stuff I love is cool. Even the stuff that was maybe considered lame when I started listening to it (Sade, The Style Council, Weather Report) has over time come to be considered cool. (As to whether this is a direct byproduct of my patronage, or just coincidental, I couldn't possibly say.) There are artists I love whose coolness is questionable (Bruce Springsteen, The Flaming Lips, Frank Sinatra), but none who are universally considered lame. I am just very, very cool. My top played songs of 2020 playlist on Spotify contains Don McLean, Ace, Sheryl Crow, The Four Seasons, Albert Hammond, Jim Croce, Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, Patsy Cline, Catatonia, Vin Diesel, Robert Palmer, blink-182, Bread, The Beatles, Dashboard Confessional, Warren Zevon, Tracy Chapman, Bruce Hornsby, Tears For Fears, New Found Glory, Todd Rundgren, Radiohead, Matthew Wilder, Dave Matthews Band, Tom Petty, and Grandaddy, and it's still cool as fuck. I honestly cannot help it. I am the opposite of lame.
As an aside, this is my most played song on Spotify in 2020. It would be deeply uncool, but for the fact that it's my most played song on Spotify in 2020. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.

I don't know if Steps are well known outside the UK but they were a deeply uncool cheesy pop band and I love 'em!
Plus I love this guy - mentioned by Skinny.
I think his cover of Dylan's I'll Be Your Baby Tonight with UB40 is ace.
More people should know it.
Here's his best album:
There's a strong argument to be made that love in and of itself, particularly of the hero-worship variety, is a deeply, inherently uncool act, regardless of the object. Like, really loving an artist is a nerdy endeavour for anoraks. Nonchalant appreciation is preferable. _________________ 2021 in full effect. Come drop me some recs. Y'all know what I like.
