NPR Podcast theme song writer (Nick Thorburn) meets absolute weirdo experimental brooklyn legend (Alden Penner) and the result is at first musically interesting and fun, if morbid at times. Only to explode through the course of the record as Nick and Alden's rivalry develops into barely masked hatred, "I write the songs, No I WRITE THE SONGS, YOU SAY I'M DOING IT WRONG? YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG." It bleeds with happiness and a lack of restraint (from the reallllly bright synth filters to the clipped vocal sound effects) but has a death wish a mile wide. Essential high school stuff really.

I remember seeing Unicorns play in a tiny bookstore in Victoria in 2004, definitely a concert highlight for me. That was peak manic indie twee.
