Gonna have to listen to Heaux Tales again a few times, didn't do much for me personally when it came out and just kind of washed over me, had no idea it was gonna be such a smash come the end of the year, maybe I'm just getting old...

Yeah, good points by one and all. Fair to to say that Promises is a fusion of genres. I guess I just found Sanders’ playing the most central and interesting part. It’s not not jazz anyway Laughing

I suspect this album will be a keeper. The album was trending on BEA today. Probably due to appearing a lot on critics lists.

In other news, I thought OK Human would be doing better on these here lists.

I think Pitchfork was reading our conversation. Laughing

They're going with "Ambient Jazz".

Just personal speculation, but I could see Earl dropping a surprise album soon. The title "Sick!" is floating around. New track is solid. He can still wrap words around the beat better than anyone else right now, maybe ever. Little less lo-fi this time around, but still very Earl-y. Really technical stuff sounding like butter.

Earl has announced a new 10-track project "Sick!" out in January.

Year-end-lists aside, gotta mention some new stuff. December's actually been quite interesting.

Kick IIIII by Arca

For one thing, Arca's Kick series is insane. III & IIIII are two of the best records of the year, and for completely different reasons. The project as a whole is an overwhelming undertaking— the sounds, progressions and production techniques are def a solid 5-10 years ahead of their time. Can't even comprehend how most of this is done. The banger-ism of III and the cinematic pool of IIIII definitely warrant separate releases, but they pair so nicely you almost want it to be a double album. (IIII was the weakest of the bunch imo, but people seem to be pointing fingers at II). Either way, awestruck.

Forfolks by Jeff Parker

Jeff Parker plays guitar jazzily. It's a good spin. Some interesting textures and atmospheres along the way. Despite looking like a simpler album I'd rec hi-fi headphones/speakers. Sounds like he's right there.

Reclusive Rituals by Shay Hazan

Speaking of kind-of-jazz, this is a pretty slick project. It's bass-fronted jazz with a couple different instruments along the way, but it's super Madlib/Roots/Dilla-y, and has some really crisp beats. Production's ace. Very cool overall vibe.

Tanganyika Na Uhuru by Kiko Kids Jazz

This is a "comp" kinda, but the tracks were never originally released. Dance-y stuff from 50s/60s Tanzania. For something so early, it's amazing how many influences you can hear throughout the tracks. There's a Caribbean vibe at times, middle-eastern trances, berber-ish stuff, highlife, maybe some rumba/tango inspirations. As cramped as that sounds, it somehow works— all comes together really nicely. Lead inst for most of the project is an electric mandolin.

Dua Naga by Rinuwat

This is some gamelan-metal from Australia. I'd say it's on the brink of being something really good, but not quite. Going to keep an eye out on these guys in the future.

Umdali by Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O

Speaking of jazz, here's some more from South Africa. it's just a super solid record. Excellent all around. Bright, punchy, heartfelt— it's a great listen. If you want something super easy to jump into, just give this a quick Google and hit play.

Balens Cho (Hot Candles) by Mach-Hommy

A sister piece of Pray For Haiti, and it's basically just as good. Just because it isn't getting as much hype, it's not one to miss.

It's still not really a "smash" it's just that it's much better than anything of its contemporary R&B field the last 12 months Laughing

Anyone who likes quiet guitar music intertwined with more orchestral pieces and likes bands like The Slow Show, just listen to this late discovery by me as well:

Cinnamon Fields by Bony Man
The guy is from Iceland and released the album completely independently. He was picked up by a Dutch music site and then the word was spread very quickly just because of the sheer quality of this album. It would be nice if some of you would also make the effort of listening to it: I promise it will be worth your time!
