Inside is definitely a movie. It's almost more a documentary about the making of the special than it is a special.

Cannes reaction was stellar Think they're saying it was a 9m+ standing ovation.
Pumped.
He might just win the Palme D'or after all. (I'm doubting Spike would actually give it to him, but he's walking away with something major).
The festival has looked fantastic so far. Annette, Drive My Car, Lingui, Ahed's Knee, The Worst Person In The World, Bergman Island, Compartment No. 6... all sounding great. Benedetta didn't land the best reviews, but it still looks like a blast. Memoria, Red Rocket, Titane and A Hero (which, I think has decent odds to win) haven't even premiered yet. This year looks stacked.
I think Lingui is walking away with a major award too. Reaction was really strong.
EDIT: And out of comp has some strong entries too. The Velvet Underground doc Haynes made is apparently ace. The Souvenir Part 2, Cow, After Yang, etc... _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!

Sean Baker's Red Rocket (Trumpian ex-porn-star trainwreck drama starring Dirt Nasty) went over extremely well the other day. Felt like it came out of nowhere, but I could see it being a pretty big film this year.
Memoria's also looking like a slow-cinema crowdpleaser.
My to-be-wrong-predictions—
Palme D'or — A Hero
Grand Prix — Memoria & The French Dispatch
Jury Prize — Drive My Car
Director — Mahamat Saleh Haroun
Actor — ... Simon Rex? EDIT: Nvm, it's Landry Jones for sure.
Actress — Renate Reinsve (or maybe Tilda Swinton)
Screenplay — Julia Ducournau _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!

Eh, close enough.
Poor Spike. Woops.
Never thought I'd see Sparks go on stage at Cannes to accept the best director award _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!

I'm a little late on this but I just watched Summer of Soul. Really well done documentary. The restoration of the footage was absolutely incredibly done. The music of course is a big focus, but there's a ton of history there that I was not completely aware of. I won't give too much away since it's much more important coming from the interviewees, but one fantastic interview was with Charlayne Hunter-Gault (a former NYT reporter, one of the first black female reporters for a white-owned newspaper in the country) where she discussed the change from the term "negro" to "black". _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!

Looking forward to the remake of Dune. I wonder if the talking, fire spewing vagina will make an appearance?

Thanks to more than a couple factors (a two-year backlog of new releases, actually including shorts in with features, etc.), I think I've already seen over 100 "2021 movies". And this is my top 50 so far, which is already really competitive.

Somehow got the embarrassment of luck to be at the Toronto premiere (simultaneous with London's and apparently 50 cities in NA and EU) for No Time to Die, and it automatically (and still after constantly thinking about it for 48 hours) leapt to being my second-favourite Bond film behind Casino Royale. 9.5/10, and review here.
I don't attach much weight to the Palme d'Or, and as such had largely kept Titane off my radar, but on being invited to attend a press screening yesterday I decided to see what everyone was talking about. Holy fuck. This being a masterpiece of the body horror genre aside, this has one of the best, most tightly composed screenplays of the past several years and MUST be seen. Absolutely, resoundingly a 10/10 and seriously threatening to breach my top 100 films.

How would you rate the other Daniel Craig Bond films? I liked Casino Royale but was supremely let down by Quantum of Solace (which was a fucking mess) as well as Skyfall and Spectre (which were slightly better). My partner is a huge Bond fan so I'm sure I'll see it either way, but I'm just curious how it compares. _________________ 51 Washington, D.C. albums!
