the love that ants from up there is gettingon the 3 internet communities i track (bea, rym, aoty) is red hot. i liked it on first listen. But, oh boy, this is getting an avalanche of praise. it is wild how much their sound developed in just 1 album and 12 months.

Gave it a spin a couple hours ago. Thought it was very good, but I'm going to have to listen again on a different system of some sort. Thought the mixing was a touch muddy. Overall though, really energetic/passionate/strong/complex/neato material.

All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling, Godspeed You! Black Emperor's 1994 "lost" first release, leaked today, and it's apparently not a hoax. Band members never intended to share it to the public so it's up to you if you'd rather not listen to it. I won't be able not to though.

Woooah, wild. Wasn't expecting that. Looks/sounds legit, hoping we get some confirmation eventually. I'll get on it pronto (before it's lost again) Laughing

It'd be nice to have it on the site, but I think it's against our rules. (And... why is F# A# ∞ on BEA twice now? Think )

Unrelated, but the new Yeule is an excellent record. I'm not going to give the massive track at the end a spin, but the 'album-y' part of it has some great cuts. Hoping people give her lyrics a read while listening to it... the production can cloud it up, but she's written some really lovely work.

People close to the band on GY!BE Discord server are 100% sure it's legit for a number of reasons: tuning is the same as F# A#, apparently there was a snippet of this record that was made public (or played on the radio? I'm not sure) and that does appear (though in a slightly different version) on this record, because of Mike Moya's guitar sound and maybe for other reasons they're not sharing. But you're right, that's not confirmed. I also think we should not add it to the site.

Anyway, this leak seems to have blown out of proportion and, though I'm not exactly sure why (maybe because they think the leak came from someone in the server, which is very unlikely), GY!BE Discord server had to close after receiving threats from 4chan:

Quote:
the events surrounding the "all lights" leak have spiralled out of control to a point we never thought they would. we are facing harassment and threats of a 4chan raid. thus, for the safety of all members but especially nico, we're shutting down the server for the time being. we will keep an eye on the situation and hope to be able to come back soon. this is not the end, but right now, all of us are tired, frustrated and scared.

Ants From Up There by Black Country, New Road

Well they certainly changed things up. Not sure how I feel about it just yet. Didn't really hit me. Felt a bit flat. Perhaps it's a grower? I DO appreciate the ambition.

In other news, I'm LOVING this...

Ants From Up There fucking really hit me, like I thought the last one was pretty good, took a few listens to appreciate and came to enjoy it a lot with time, but this one has blown me away which I did not expect at all, I've listened to it pretty much any time I've been alone since it came out, over and over and over again, honestly I can't remember the last time something hooked me like this from the second it came out, mental, never expected it, but I think it's fantastic and I've gotten obsessed.

I feel very similarly. BCNR clearly went in a different direction, so it's hard to say it's an "improvement" on their last album, but damn it's really good and as good as last year's effort was, this is so much better. I know there was a saxophone and violin on the last album, but they leaned MUCH more heavily into these instruments on Ants which is awesome and really clicks for me. I see on the personnel notes that there's also mandolin, flute, and cello; I didn't notice this as much on the first listen but on another listen, the cello and flute in particular are pretty strong on some tracks.

On another note, I was a little disappointed by Mitski's new album. Not because it wasn't as good as I was expecting, but because I forgot how short all of her albums are, this one's just over 30 minutes like her last few albums. But for Laurel Hell, she'd already released like half the album as singles, so there wasn't as much more to discover with the album release. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if this sticks around in my 2022 top 10 by the end of the year.

Overall a really strong start to 2022, there's 4 albums already that I could see having a very hard time edging out of the top 10.

I feel absolutely the same. Even after the first listen, before I memorized any of the new songs, it made a huge impact and I felt like I was listening to something special, and that's something that happens very rarely with me, I usually need a few more listen before I can properly assess something. Of course, there is still lots to digest here but after 5-6 listens it just keeps getting better all the time.

Assuming Ants From Up There is one of those four, which would the other three be?

Totally! So many killer albums by BIG artists back-to-back-to-back! That new Animal Collective album may be my favorite, BUT the Weeknd, FKA Twigs, Big Thief, Black Country New Road, Cat Power, Earl Sweatshirt, Mitski, & Cate Le Bon all have albums worthy of my Top Ten!!!
