If you had to choose one--just one--what would be your choice for the perfect pop song? One that epitomizes the sound and formula yet excels above all others. I'm going to go with "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes. I think "Just Like Honey" (noise pop) is a better song, but it's obviously not your typical pop song.
Edit:
Some traits I would associate with a pop song:
short (2:00-4:00)
melody driven
verse-chorus form
accessible, simple, light ( in subject matter, structure, instrumentation)

With no certain definition of pop songs, I offer these:
The Teenagers featuring Frankie Lymon-Why Do Fools Fall in Love-1956
The Everly Brothers-All I Have to Do Is Dream-1958
The Shirelles-Will You Love Me Tomorrow-1960
Del Shannon-Runaway-1961
The Crystals-Da Doo Ron Ron-1963
The Ronettes-Be My Baby-1963
The Beach Boys-Don't Worry Baby-1964
The Righteous Brothers-You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'-1964
The Beatles-Yesterday-1965
The Mamas and the Papas-California Dreamin'-1965
The Beatles-Hey Jude-1968

Great list but what's interesting is neither "Yesterday nor "Hey Jude" contain a chorus rather they use a bridge. It's a common myth the Beatles were a verse/ chorus band when they were more into verse/verse/bridge song form. I would use "Good Vibrations" as an example in a pop song that tweaks the verse/chorus form as it was stiched together from different recordings.
According to Alan W. Pollack's note to the Beatles songs.
When I think pop, Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" but John Lennon's "Imagine" is also a candidate; maybe its not stereotypically pop, but when I worked at a bakery over the summer this guy who listened to mostly rave/electronica and this other guy who listened only to rap would sing along to "Imagine." Everyone knows "Imagine"
