Pencey Sloe's post-industrial IDM aesthetic doesn't quite compliment the vibe of their music... not sure what's up, something's just not quite clicking.
Track needs to go one step further, but it's still a really solid bit of 90s-esque enter-the-clouds dream-rock. Somewhere between MBV and Beach House.

I'm still going with Aquamarine— I've had an odd relationship with that track—
I liked it at first— no matter what, it's solid— want to love it, but— something wasn't clicking with the verses.
I didn't get it— thought the track wasn't saying much of anything.
Couple listens later it landed, but I still scratch my head on the overall composition lyrically (mainly because of the chorus).
Black Thought usually comes through, so I wasn't going to toss it out or stop trying or anything, but I definitely disregarded the bars as 'braggadocios/I'm the king' at first for some reason. Obviously his flow's stupid strong, but I figured he was just riffing off some showy vocab/broad dexterity, etc, which meant for most of the track he wasn't saying much. But I was overthinking it. It's really just... a before an after story, in a sense. Point 0 and Point 9, and being content with that.

Danger Mouse came swinging straight from 2006 with the beat. Glad he did. Gave the album the flavour it needed.

I feel like I've heard a hundred "Smile to Zero"s at this point and I'm not bored of it but it doesn't exactly make me excited anymore. Black Thought's "Aquamarine" keeps my attention far more.

Yeah, Smile to Zero feels not only Deja Vu but too stifled for its own good, Aquamarine (while far from stunning) shows there is still some life in that always underappreciated Philly rap game.
