RiRi is my undeniable personal favourite <3. She doesn’t have a showy KnwolesCareyHoustonAguileraesque voice, (Chris Martin (#credibility) considers her the best voice in the world), She only goes up high when she needs to and thats a large part of what I like about her...the song always comes first!
Maybe this has been the key to the success of so many of her singles. You see that up there ^ 11 #1’s! Holy crap, she’s She’s number 7 in the list of the artists with the most number one singles (Billboard) of all time (equal to Whitney) and she’s my age! Now I hate Social Networking more than most (No Facebook, No Twitter, No Tumblr) but in this age it has an undeniable bearing on how someone will fare in the charts (If you’re still being talked about at a large volume you is relevant) Rihanna is #5 which ain’t too shabby.
So she’s commercially successful, she’s popular and she’s got Jhereko’s vote but what about criticall success? Admittedly that metacritic score up there doesn’t take into account her 2 fairly shitty first albums that established herself as a sunny Caribbean nice gurl. Good Girl Gone Bad her third effort, was her breakout. The smash hit Umbrella launched her into absolute super-super stardom and it’s definitely one of the best tracks of the last decade. In 2007 Magazines such as Rolling Stone, Time and Entertainment Weekly placed Umbrella amongst the top 3 songs of the year, and it even makes Rolling Stone’s list of the top 500 songs of all time! Pitchfork placed it at #25 out of 500 tracks from the 200’s and NME placed it at number 63 of the top 150 of the last 15 years. So yeah that’s just one song but it’s pretty good.
But ultimately Wraithchild is asking about how these artists are doing right now. And though Rihanna currently has the #1 single on Billboard with “We Found Love”, her new album Talk That Talk is receing some of the worst reviews of her career (With a metacritic score of 62). Part of the problem is Rihanna’s hyper prolificness...(6 albums in 7 years! WTF) So if she wants to make some amazing albums again she probably needs to slow down but Good Girl Gone Bad to Loud is a pretty stellar triple (maybe Chris Brown slapping da bitch was the best thing that ever happened for her! )
Overall (Right Now):
Commercial: ***** (Current #1 Single and even though Talk That Talk debuted at number 3 (Below Nickelback!) it’s not exactly a sign of decline.
Critical: ****
Jhereko: *****
Best Album: Good Girl Gone Bad (Loud ain't far behind though)
