This is something I've been wondering a lot recently in my social life.

Often, I'll be hanging out with my friends somewhere, and I'll have to take part in some dance party. Being one who never turns down an opportunity to meet those of the opposite gender, I normally don't mind. But somewhere eventually, the line is eventually drawn in the sand when they play crap like the Black Eyed Peas. Maybe with one or two songs at a time, I can tolerate most top-40 music. But when they play a half-hour of Will.I.Am's garbage at once, I can't take it. At a wedding I was at a few months ago, I asked the DJ to play "Head Like a Hole" or "The Hand That Feeds" by NIN, but they said that it was "not suitable for a family audience", even though "Sexy and I Know It" somehow was Shocked .

So, when you're at a wedding or a club or wherever, how do you put up with crappy music en mass? Do you leave the club? Do you diss anyone who dances to shlock like the "Macarena"?

As someone who just turned 18, and wants to remain being social without destroying my ears, what would you guys suggest?

I avoid Top 40 music as much as humanly possible - I don't listen to radio & rarely watch TV or movies. My 'going-on' socialising is usually at the pub - specifically one that doesn't have a DJ playing, and where the music is usually quiet enough to hear people speak! My only main problem is at my gym, where they insist on blasting out shitty dance music and showing MTV on the TV screens, but i remedy this listening to my ipod on headphones!

on a separate note - i find it amazing that when I do catch some videos on MTV at gym while listening to my ipod, they all seem pretty much identical in their concept: the solo artist/rapper/rappers/boy-girl band are posing & lip syncing, either in a party/street/mansion/club setting, surrounded by generic teens/models/women/other rappers, and there's always at least 1 of the following: Luxury/European Sports Cars, Breakdancing, Skateboarding/Freestyle BMX or some other 'extreme' sport, a DJ playing to a crowd and unnecessary 'bling' - jewellery/iPhones/expensive spirits/'fashion' clothing being flung at the camera....I'm just grateful I can't hear any of the music!

Just roll with it, dude.

I don't really have a taste for most of that shlock, but it isn't "unlistenable". It's popular cause it's easy to listen to. It may not be my cup of tea, I may not spin Britney Spears records the second I get home, but I'll withstand it at the club, the bar, the party and so on. That picture of me dryp-humping that sexy lad at my prom? I was dancing to N'SYNC. You can have a good time with anything on the speakers, it just isn't complaint worthy at all. You have to learn to not besuch a music snob all the time, because you'll lose friends over it.

If you REALLY can't stand it, go to different clubs or parties. I know a couple of places in TO that play alt.rock and electronic instead of your regular bubblegum, derezzed bass dance remixes, I'm sure your city has some too - and just try to reach out and meet friends who have similar musical tastes to you, if they throw a party or anything they'll usually play music you enjoy.[/b]

...this^

Although you could give reason for playing "Closer" during a particularly raunchy honeymoon.

Well one thing is tolerating this kind of music while it's playing in the background (ie not minding it), the other is going to party and dancing and rocking out or whateverthefuckyouwanna call it to it...
I don't.. nay.. can't do it, hence I am an antisocial fuck

I do allow the possibility that there are other reasons for that beside my taste in music... Just my excuse I guess Embarassed

Yeah, like Jack said, learn to endure it. And do save your criticism for those who want to hear it if you want to avoid becoming a social paria.

Generally if you're a good dancer you never mind this music. you just enjoy it for fun.
So my Advice is learning to dance R&B, House, etc ... plus girls love good dancers Wink
