whiskey /
thick, with scenes of smoke
wine and cheese,
acid trips and the tease
of ruby-red lipstick,
blacklisted pens and
kaleidoscope lights—

it is a flourish of tints,
bold tones, lenses tinged
journalistic to mythos,
these city-light days,
night dotted drunk with twine,
echos, as the spool runs dry,
tapes blurring til worn—

The gist/ rules:

BEA composes a list of our 100 favourite films of the 1960s. (Again! V2!). All lists will be PMed to me or posted in this thread, maxing out at 100. The final list will be 100 films. I'll be accepting lists of any denotation up to 100. The size of your list determines its weight. Films must be longer than 40 minutes. Films must have an international premiere date between January 1st 1960 and December 31st 1969. Documentaries are allowed. Comedy specials will not be accepted.

SUBCATAGORIES
—10 Best Music Scores
Which you may submit up to 25, but the final lists will be the top 10.
(Music scores will only account for original material)

—10 Best Short Films
Which you may submit up to 25, but the final lists will be the top 10*.
(Short films are defined as films between the length of 2-39 minutes)
(This is the first time we have ever done this, and I'm sure there will be hiccups, but for now I'm just going to cross my fingers)
Please feel free to post short films via Youtube in the thread!
(Would love to have a short-film festival vibe— there's plenty to dive into).
*this may be increased depending on the popularity/submission results/public response

The Original list

Lists will also be accepted in IMDb and Letterboxd format. Deadline will be January 27th 2024.

A couple thoughts/questions: It sounds like TV specials are eligible, which I was thinking about going into this. Another question, what about individual short films within anthologies? For example, Spirits of the Dead (1968), a 2-hour horror anthology comprising of three short films, each with a different director. We can vote for the entire anthology film on the features section, but are we also allowed to vote for the three films that make up Spirits of the Dead in the shorts section? They are each on the 40-minute cusp, so it's a grey area.

Spirits of the Dead is just one example. From what I've seen on letterboxd, there were quite a few anthology films like this in the 60s. I haven't actually seen any, though. Spirits of the Dead is on my watchlist. Start recommending shorts, BEA, cause my knowledge of 60s shorts is limited to (off the top of my head) Antoine and Collette, La Jetee, and all those holiday TV specials Laughing. I'm up for a festival.

I worked on compiling my 60s shorts list this morning, and came up with a solid 23 Smile — I'm actually really happy with it, but I'm also assuming I'm about to find a good handful more during the duration of the poll. I'll post some later this week. Have to admit, I think this portion of the poll could be the most exciting. (La Jetee and Antoine & Colette are both on my list).

My initial rules/thoughts on the matter:
—TV specials (not episodes) under 39 minutes will be allowed.
—Music videos will not be allowed.
& (I'll add)
—Anthology films will be classified as films, not individual shorts (unless compiled from elsewhere, but I can't think of any examples of that).

Say... the latest Wes Anderson quad-short series re: Dahl is eventually released as a singular piece— the individual shorts would be allowed to be submitted solo. Otherwise (like Spirits of The Dead), whole feature film.

Thanks Olli, Bozo & Charli— tallied Smile

And thanks for the early shorts list Charli. Definitely a good handful on there I want to check out. Watched Time Piece for the first time yesterday— it'll definitely land my list. Just an overall fascinating experience to see Henson in almost this talented-college-film-student-esque state.
