It depends how you define 'greatness'.

...yeah, if the definition differs person to person that means that 'greatness' is subjective.

It is. But depending on your definition of greatness, objective elements play a part, as well.

Music isn't a science. Here's another example:
Apples are the most popular fruit. They are influential in the making of pies, tarts and other goodies (not to mention the ever popular grapple). They have no doubt made an astounding impact on our diet. Are they the greatest fruit?

Fruit is a stupid example, but that would simply depend on how it compares with the other fruit. And it would definitely be greater than a fruit that no one likes, and has made no impact whatsoever.

Also, I never said music was a science - I was just giving comparisons to other fields where 'objectivity' isn't truly objective, but is close enough that we can reasonably use the term.

If, like you said, music is purely subjective, and all music is as good as each other depending on the individual, you paying any attention to the overall charts here, or any critic reviews, or any lists or rankings anywhere, seems to be a contradiction to what you've been saying.

How is it a contradiction??? Because I enjoy seeing what other people like? Overall charts just allow me to see what a bunch of other people enjoy. Just because I don't completely agree with everything doesn't mean I shouldn't pay attention to it. I'm finding music that I otherwise would not have heard. That's why I stick around here. I'm confused at where the contradiction is.

What I was getting at was that you implied that no one person's taste in music is better than anyone else's. If this is the case, ANY recommendations from ANYONE would be just as good.

Why is fruit a stupid example? You drew the same comparisons. And how stupid does it sound to say "apple is the greatest fruit" and then defend it by stating its impact on people? Really stupid if you ask me.

ANY recommendation from ANYONE is just as good. Are you seriously that snobby?
"Oh you actually like Lady Gaga? Well you have awful taste in music."

The equivalent of saying:
"Oh you actually like apricots? Well you have awful taste in food."

...what?
I did not draw comparisons to things like fruit at all. Since when has anyone talked about the 'greatness' of fruit? I never said "apple is the greatest fruit" or any of this fruit crap - that was all you.

That's not 'snobby' at all.
I would rather take recommendations from a consensus of multiple critics than just one critic.
I would rather take recommendations from a professional critic than a stranger posting their first review online.
I would rather take recommendations from a Smiths fan than a Beiber fan.

I never said anything about anyone having "awful taste" in anything, and I don't know we're you're drawing these things from.

That's where you talked about the greatness of fruit.

That's subjective.

Right. So the definition of greatness is subjective. Case closed.

Right. So the definition of greatness is subjective. Case closed.

Interesting little debate you have here. I agree with both of you: The definition of greatness is definetily very subjective, and there definetily is music of higher and lower quality, and therefore better and worse tastes in music. Whether my taste is good or not I can´t say with a certainity, all I can do is trust my instincts.

Also, the comparation with fruit is slightly misleading, I think. The difference with music is that it´s made by someone, and that person has his own level of talent and musical knowledge. Talent+good musicianship+inspiration=good music. Fruit=fruit.
