I'll go with Jean de Florette. Maybe not as "important" as Le Samourai but far more enjoyable. _________________ I love all music. It makes you feel like living. Silence is death.
Don't bother. Or try the Pagnol version, Manon des Sources. Pagnol is a much better filmmaker than Berri, plus you don't get the annoying bravoura of Montand, Depardieu and Auteuil rivalling for "best French actor of the year" with all the histrionism they can come up with.
Le Samourai is my favorite film. The film is an interesting take on the hit man character. Alain Delon gives one of the best performances of the 60's and it is one of the best shot films I've ever seen. The cinematography does a great job of presenting Paris in the 60's.
