My picks aren't which bands made the absolute best single album from the US rock scene, otherwise my picks would be different. Instead they are which bands/artists made some of the best US rock albums ever and had consistancy.
Husker Du: Zen Arcade; New Day Rising; Flip Your Wig; Warehouse Songs
Bruce Springsteen: The River; Born to Run; Born in the USA; The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Suffle; Nebraska; Tunnel of Love
The Velvet Undground: The Velvet Underground and Nico; White Light/White Heat; Loaded; The Velvet Underground; The Velvet Underground: Live 1969; VU _________________ "The future is unwritten."

What if we had to list which bands are the most American?
I'd argue:
Bruce Springsteen
Aerosmith
Grateful Dead
...and maybe Ted Nugent.
