Okay, so, me and some mates are planning a roadtrip down to California, hopefully in time for Coachella.

So... um... I have a few questions...

For starters, the thing that really irks me is that going to visit the United States will mean I won't be able to legally purchase alcohol (>21)... how lenient are the laws concerning this? Is it still legal for me to consume it? If not, will there be any kind of penalty?

Also, drug laws - weed is pricier and shittier in the States, that I know from experience, but I don't know too much about the laws pertaining to it. How lenient are they? I mean, we have vapour lounges in TO and they advertise rather explicitly what activities go down there and the police don't really care - is it a bigger deal in some states? I'm assuming smuggling drugs into the country is not a good idea. Guess I won't be doing that.

Are drugs cheaper in Cali? I've only really bought in Illinois and Florida, but I figure Cali of all places would have a bigger narcotics scene.

I think you should load up on root beer and start smoking packs of Smarties, but that's just me.

people at festivals will usually smoke you out if you nudge up to them and start chatting it up. as far as booze... sucks to be you because I usually get carded at festivals; I'm sure you can find someone to give money to and buy booze for you... you're a lovable person

If you come around Hillbillyville we have a different set of rules on alcohol: If you can hold your own you can have as much as you want.

Going to California though, expect it to be a bitch to get a drink from any kind of establishment if you are under 21 and look under 35. If you're under 21 and caught with a drink you'll end up in more trouble than you'd get into in Europe, so don't get caught. It's rather easy not to as long as you stay reasonable. I'm not sure about California licensing laws but around these parts (Midwest) small foreigner-owned liquor stores and gas stations tend to be the least stringent on enforcing the card rules. On a side note, I find it stupid that you can drive at 16, vote at 18, but not drink until 21. That will only lead to kids getting into drugs instead. It should be drink at 16, drive at 18, vote at 21.

Don't know about drugs, but that's for suckers anyway.

EDIT: Oops. Canada, not Europe. Can't make the comparison about the level of trouble for certain, but I'd guess Canada is more European on juvenile drinking enforcement as they seem to be on everything else.

I always thought Netherlands was in Europe! Italy has a low drinking age of 16, unless supplied by your parents or guardians then it's 14 or 15.

I did too but the maple leaf on the flag icon made my thoughts go elsewhere than Europe. Italy has remained in a "private enforcement" state of mind when it comes to drinking, which in a way I approve of. It's not your age that is important, it is what you do with the drink you legally or illegally acquire (and yeah, just in case some smart ass comes around, you DRINK it...but how do you handle the drinking).

Get someone older to buy for you, I say. Big, populous states like Cali or New York are often very stringent about selling to "minors." I'm sure you'll meet plenty of great people on your trip who will be willing to purchase for you, though, or even if you just have one friend who's over 21. Bad news for bars, though. For those, it's fake or bust.

You luck out on the drugs side of things, though. Cali's big into it. Don't know about prices, but I guarantee you it'll probably be twice as potent than if you're buying from anywhere else in the states (excepting, maybe, Kentucky).

California weed is BOMB

Don't you diss our weed

You wish you had our weed

But yeah you can get fined for drinkin' underage

So get an old friend to buy booze

And then enjoy yourself

Pfft? California weed? CALIFORNIA WEED? Don't make me laugh. Your petty California weed is nothing compared to the beast which is BC Bud. I scoff at your weed, SCOFF AT IT.
