- Post subject: Best Canadian Artist - Nominations
|
Since the other tournaments seem to be on hold for the time being, I thought I'd try one of my own, and test out a new format. If this works, it will require only 2 posts from each person (though presumably with some heavy thinking before posting), and overall should take no longer than 2 weeks! So we'll be done by January 31.
First, as in some other tournaments, reply to this post and rank your top ten Canadian artists. Canadian artists are those according to BEA, for simplification, unless a justified case can be made for the multinationals (such as Rufus Wainwright). 10 points to your first choice, down to 1 point for your last choice.
Second, I will compile all the results to create a tournament bracket, much like the NCAA March Madness one, of the top 32 or 64 artists, depending on the depth of the field. I will then post this bracket (not sure how yet, image might be the easiest way... suggestions can be sent by PM) in a new thread for all to see.
Third, you will vote. But instead of having multiple polls for the various matchups, you will simply rerank the 32/64 choices according to your preference. You can rank as many or as few as you like. This time, there are no points, so your top choice is #1 and your last choice is the highest number.
Fourth, I will do each of the matchups offline, based on the rankings. It sounds complicated, but it makes sense to me In a nutshell, though, I will look at each matchup in the first round, and whichever artist appears higher in the majority of voting lists will be declared the winner and move on to the next round.
Why this way? Well, this prevents me from having to ask you for new lists after every round. If your choice moves on, I already know what your ranking is, and if it doesn't move on, it won't require you to rerank your remaining choices. If there is an artist that you don't ever want to vote for, simply leave it off the list, in which case I will treat it like an abstention if you don't vote for both artists in a single matchup.
I will explain this again when I post the voting thread, with more details and tangible examples.
Lastly, why Canadian artists? Well, it seems we have had a resurgence of sorts of Canadian BEA members, and the album tournament is currently taking place so people should have a fair amount of exposure to the artists, but its not such a large pool of options that it will be relatively easy to come up with a decent top 32/64. The fact that I am Canadian has nothing to do with it.
Nominations will be open until midnight GMT January 23rd. It will likely take me a day to compile everything into the bracket, and then voting will be open until midnight January 30th. I will try and post the results February 1st.
So, to start things off, here is my list.
10 pts: Stars
9 pts: Pilate/Pilot Speed
8 pts: Arcade Fire
7 pts: Nelly Furtado
6 pts: Jann Arden
5 pts: Great Big Sea
4 pts: Sarah McLachlan
3 pts: Feist
2 pts: Danny Michel
1 pt: Chantal Kreviazuk
