Anyone have any news on Modest Mouse? It's been almost 5 years since We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (quite a topical album title, given the events in Italy). They've been rumoured to be working on a new album for almost 3 years, and I'm not overlooking the No-one's First and You're Next EP.

Any news? Pray

It was sorta supposed to come out in 2011?

Isaac Brock recently admitted in an interview that they've just been kinda lazy and not really actively trying to write music.

Breaks my heart to say this as a hardcore Mouser, but if they plan on putting out more stuff like We Were Dead...maybe that's not so bad.

It wasn't BAD, but it spelled very uneasy things about the direction they were headed.

I like We Were Dead as much as Long Road and Lonesome Crowded West.

There. I said it. All three deserve four stars out of 5.

No, but legitimately, I've never heard anyone express that opinion before. I'm curious.

I also enjoy We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank as much as any other Modest Mouse album. I think The Moon and Antarctica is their greatest, but I honestly enjoy We Were Dead just as much, and as much as any of the others too. I've never really understood the hate for it. Is it just too mainstream for you guys that hate it? Think Cause it sounds like Modest Mouse to me.

Well, I guess Modest Mouse is sorta like Spoon to me, where almost every album that they make gets a 4 because of their sound alone. I'll admit that, due to their lengths, I haven't gotten the chance to listen to either of those three as extensively as I'd like, so it's hard for me to form an opinion extensive enough to tell them apart.

They both feature some of the best bass work around.

As mainstream alternative rock it's actually pretty good, but as a Modest Mouse album it's a failure. It's very straightforward and loses a lot of the musical accouterments that other MM albums have had, even on Good News. There's very little sonic experimentation and as such, much less variety. MM had gotten to a place with M&A and Good News where they were essentially chewing up alt-rock tropes and spitting them out as masterpieces of weirdness and wonder; now they're just playing those tropes straight.
