It's an odd thing to ask but I have been wondering about something for a while. I'm unable to get an adequate answer from any google search and don't fancy going onto those yahoo answer websites with. No one I immediately know has a concrete idea or answer to it either. So you know, might be interesting to post here.
The question is: what does it mean to "play something off against something else"? Playing something off? Playing a person against another? Whenever I hear the phase, there seems to be 2 bigger parties/companies/countries and 1 smaller one. The smaller one is said to be playing the bigger ones "off" or "against each other".
What actions does the smaller have to do to constitute "playing something off" or "playing against each other"? What is actually going on between the parties?

Everything which doesn't go your way is the result of - as far as your concerned - people who specifically have it out for you, or the Illuminati. Rarely are you ever at fault. I would assume that this extends beyond and into your personal life, as it does with most people suffering from a persecution complex, and further assume you extrapolate some inner-working conspiracy within all you do which goes wrong, rather than admit that you yourself may have been the problem.
