I mean...yeah. It's asking for people's opinions.

So I have to put artists I really like but that I don't think have an album I really like? Like, all the singles are good or there are some great songs but they can't get it together for something which will make me sit down and listen, as in listen in a whole sitting and think "Wow! That was a great album!"?

Exactly.

Why are there so many threads like this lately?

I would personally put the Chili Peppers in this category. They have probably 15 songs I really love, but no album that I love. Even with BSSM I can't really listen start to finish.

And Aerosmith definitely.

The Cure?

I mean if you take all your favourite Cure songs you could make 3 or 4 incredible albums but none that they ever made really seem to stand out enough to be called great.

Disintegration or Kiss Me are probably the best but they're far from flawless.

Oh and I'd second Johnny Cash for sure, his discography is a mess of singles and compilations with barely a proper album to be seen from the early days.

Probably why his top ranked album (At Folsom Prison, a live album) is only at 201 and he has a band ranking of 120.

Great artists without great albums really do suffer on this site, I mean Johnny Cash the 120th best? That ain't right.

the cure made "faith", it seems to me that 5 out of the 8 songs are awesome.

Two main reasons I expect

1) Once you start making too many charts you realize that it is impossible to have charts for all decades which will be made up of only "best ever" albums. There are only so many "best ever" albums but there is nearly an infinity of "I like" to "great". Particularly when you get into the 60s or earlier when basically the album was not an artistic medium in and of itself but only a format.

&

2) Once you start to look at your 500 listed albums and cannot find influential artists such as BB King (or some of the others listed so far in this thread), you realise that the best of music cannot be translated in best ever album lists no matter how long or how numerous they are.

I can't wait to be able to make thematic lists ... It will then be possible to say more with shorter lists in my opinion.

I'd say that a lot of the great 60s Motown artists fall into this category quite easily... I spat with frustration because of this when I did my 60s chart... (figuratively not literally)

The Velvelettes
The Ronettes
Martha And the Vandellas
Frank Wilson
Smokey Robinson (good albums yes but nowhere near as good as the singles he has pumped out constantly since the 60s would suggest)
R. Dean Taylor
The Flirtations
The Supremes
Jackie Wilson (ok not motown but still!)

I could go on but I am getting depressed again...

Agreed. I'd include a great deal of musicians from what I consider the "Jazz Era". Namely musicians from George Gershwin to Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong.

Paul. McCartney.

Great artist. Not anywhere near an album as great as his talent.
