LCD Sound System was the first band that came to mind. They don't have one album that rises above being "good," but if you culled the best tracks from their three studio albums you would have one of the best compilations ever made, easily.

seconded. and same with the White Stripes for me.

I think the thing about LCD is that every record of theirs was incredibly awesome, they have a very consistent discography, but those 3 are amazing records. IMO "this is happening" is the best one, at first i thought it was just really good but then BOOM one of my favorites all-time. Give it another listen and maybe it'll hit you as it hit me.

...which is one of the greatest albums ever made.

Queen is the band that comes to mind. While they have several very good albums they never managed to put together a masterpiece, despite churning out high quality music for a long time.

Los Saicos

A great 60s garage rock band with some excellent singles, but they never released a studio album.

Tthe problem with albums since the advent of the compact disc is their lack of brevity. Someone mentioned the Chili Peppers as a great example. You boil down BSSM to a 45-48 min album and its becomes INSANELY better than the finished product. Another example from the vinyl era is Physical Graffiti. Simply remove sides 3 and 4, add the Wonton Song to side two, and you have an album better than Houses of the Holy.
Two other items play into the reason albums have fallen short of classic status since the mid nineties (Rap). The first is the insane desire to record a million different multi-tracks onto an album (Rap) instead of going for simple 8-16 tracked albums played mostly live (Rap) in the studio. The process lacks heart (Rap). I blame Brian May. The second is the Digital Recording Process (Rap). Whenever you get a recent artist that falls in love with his old analogue albums (Rap) and records on tape, somehow the albums are richer and just 'feel' better (Hip-hop). The warmth of the album is reduced by the sampling.
Also, there was less global warming (gangster-wanna be b.s. rap stuff), better elected officials, Farrah Fawcett posters, puppies were cuter and Hot female teachers nailing 16 year olds was a fantasy, not a crime Shame on you .
Elvis Presley
Deep Purple
David Bowie
Queens of The Stone Age
Any Hip Hop/Rap/Gangsta whatever

You know I liked them both, it's just that Made in the Dark falls off halfway through, and One Life Stand was incomplete. I think they have a great album in them still, it just hasn't happened yet.

What Mountain Goat albums would you call great? Also, do you prefer Mirrored or Gloss Drop?

Smashing Pumpkins..
I think the best songs from Mellon Collie could make one of my favourite albums of all time, and there are several more fantastic songs from their first two albums + Adore (I haven't heard yet the rest of their discography)...
But the way it is, I think those albums are all good without being that great
