Despite being born and growing up in Sweden I have never, except for a handful of Opeth songs, listened to the genre they call Swedish (sometimes Scandinavian) Metal. Couldn't tell you what it sound like to be honest.

Talking about music in the Swedish language indeed Cornelis is a giant (although technically Dutch, not Swedish) Wink And Bo Kaspers indeed a great band with excellent albums (especially in their first 4-5 years). I would also add Bob Hund though, and then you'd have three of those Smile

My two favorite Swedish artists would be Cornelis Vreeswijk and Peps Persson. Both of them sing in Swedish though. Other good ones include Lars Demian, Lars Winnerbäck, Timbuktu, Bo Kaspers Orkester, Wilmer X and Wille Crafoord.

That can be debated. He was indeed born in The Netherlands but emigrated to Sweden at age 12. All his music (with a few easily counted exceptions) was conceived, written down, and recorded in Swedish. His Dutch musical career consists of translations of the songs he originally wrote in Swedish. Not sure if he's listed on this site or not. If he is I believe he should be listed as Swedish. Again, it can be debated and...

I could be wrong...but I'm not.

I've always had a soft spot for ABBA. I don't care if people judge - they have an impressive arsenal of well-crafted pop tunes.

In another direction, why hasn't anyone mentioned the Hellacopters? I love their retro sound. Great guitar driven, non-pretentious rock. Cool

I don't think you'll get judged by many people for that.
Even the Sex Pistols were fans of ABBA

Oh, I like this thread!

So, I'm not really into swedish music, I basically think The Hives, The Cardigans, Moneybrother, Soundtrack of Our Lives, Mando Diao, ABBA, Ace of Base, Roxette, to Europe, Nenneh Cherry, Peter, Bjorn and John, Kent, Lykke Li, Robyn etc are crap (well, some of them have some decent songs), but there is one very notable band that hasn't been mentioned here: the progressive rock band Änglagård. Their album "Hybris", together with Dream Theater's "Images and words" (both released in 1992) were crucial to the revival of the progressive rock scene in the early nineties.

But the award for greatest musician of the last fifty years undoubtedly goes to Cornelis Vreeswijk.
Despite being born in the Netherlands and emigrated to Sweden as a twelve year old (as already stated here, and he IS listed as dutch which I agree is wrong), he managed to master the language better than pretty much anybody. Of course you have to know swedish to fully appreciate his works, but here are some songs I think can be very enjoyable regardless (the first one is a "cover" of the swedish 18th century musician C.M. Bellman):

Oh dear, thanks for posting those videos.
Balladen om Herr Fredrik Åkare och den söta fröken Cecilia Lind is such a favourite.
ALTHOUGH it is a close call to being labeled as "paedophilia-prone"
With Cecilia being 16 and Fredrik an old man...
Wink
