How come The Queen Is Dead is ranked so much higher than The Smiths?
Reel Around The Fountain, You've Got Everything Now, Pretty Girls Make Graves, This Charming Man, Still Ill, Hand In Glove, What Difference Does It Make?, I Don't Owe You Anything...

IMO, because it is so much better than The Smiths. Not only is it better track-for-track, it is also far more cohesive as a whole. Also, if we are including comps, I prefer Louder than Bombs as well -- but not by much. _________________ My voodoo master, my machine, baby, will not stand in line...

I've always thought that The Queen is Dead was better than the s/t one.
BUT
Two days ago, I listened to both. And now The Smiths is my favorite one. What Difference Does It Make has always been one of my fav Smiths' songs though. So yeah. Both awesome; S/t one is better
1) Some people defer to TQID because it is the one most often name-checked by critics and other fans so they want to be in-the-know.
2) It had the biggest impact to the music environment at its time compared to any other Smiths album. The debut wasn't even noticed n the states until years later when people started to find out about the band. In Britain the debut was a bit of a sensation but by TQID the band was the main thing in rock.
3) Some people, like myself, just find it to be a better album with higher heights.
Having said all of that, I have 2 Smiths albums in my Top 100 and it is these 2, so you are correct that the debut is indeed great.
PS - I would say that Louder Than Bombs / The World Won't Listen get unfairly left off of people's charts because "they are comps" when in reality these songs don't appear anywhere else... so are they really comps? Had these been studio albums I daresay they'd be as highly rated as TQID.
For me, I don't like the sound and production of the first album as much. It certainly has some strong songs, including a couple of absolute classics within their canon, but it also has a couple of real clunkers on it too. There's one song in the middle that seems to go nowhere and for far too long. I think they were still developing as a band, and you can hear it in the sound. Maybe I'm wrong. It's been a couple of years since I listened to it. I will say that The Queen is Dead, the song, is much a stronger opener than Reel Around the Fountain, even though that's a good song. The Queen is Dead has more of a flow to it, too, which is a an attribute almost all great albums share.

I have Louder than Bombs on my chart.
