The archive thing is quite easy to do. I just need to flick a switch. Maybe if a thread hasn't been responded to for at least a year, it should be archived/closed?

I'm against this idea. No thread should be closed just because it is old.

I think that is a sensible idea... It keeps the forums current and less cluttered with 'old stuff'

You are not closing it... you are archiving it! There is a subtle difference.

There are pages and pages and pages of threads that noone has commented on in years and are unlikely to bring back anytime soon. An archive is one of the best ways of managing this and will make the forums a lot easier to navigate through!

But hey it is up to the members. I personally see no value in leaving dead threads hanging around but that is just my opinion

EDIT: Eggman, what the hell have you done to the thread... it is totally screwed up? I can't even view it properly anymore!

I have been looking through the pages and pages of threads, and in fact, there are many threads that are interesting and which I'll probably comment on soon. So, basically, here's what I say:

There are many threads that have been ignored for a long time and which are just waiting for somebody to comment on them. These should not be locked.

That's all, folks.

I think 12-18 months is a good timescale. If a thread hasn't been commented on in that time...there really isn't a good reason to keep it open. The only reason someone would comment on a thread that's years old is if they're bored and want to give their opinion on something for no other reason than to say it (you aren't going to get a good conversation out of long gone members). I'm sure there is evidence of a 'resurrected' thread that did start an interesting dialogue, but it'd be in the minority.
