Music taste differences (U.S. vs Europe)?

This is the eternal question. The question can be divided into two sections: commercial and critics' tastes. Often argued that the USA listening to music conservative, and liberal in Europe. Is that true? I have noticed that many American artists (Madonna, Prince) have succeeded better in Europe than in their own country. What about American critics for example relationship with (European) progressive rock significance of popular music? opinions?

I would like to think it was down to the individual.

Maybe there are patturns though, so you could be part right.
