- Post subject: Is 2012 kind of a bad year for music so far?
|
I can't remember a time on BEA when a big release wasn't in at least the top 500 by this time of year, and yet the highest release for 2012 is Attack on Memory which, while a good album, won't do anything to set the world on fire. And it was in the low 1100s last time I checked.
I don't think I've added an album to my collection this year that wasn't a mixtape of some kind. Even on Rate Your Music the highest rated album of 2012 is Beach House's bloom which is averaging at 3.76 with around 700 ratings, and that's likely to drop over time given that site's habit of demolishing hype. I can't be the only person who's been noticing what an unimpressive year 2012 has been so far. What's going on out there? Where are all the jaw-droppers? Are they waiting for the second half of the year or are we just going to have to wait until 2013? _________________ I love all music. It makes you feel like living. Silence is death.

Burial's Kindred is the only thing I've been impressed by in 2012 so far, and is in my chart. MBV and Can have some awesome reissues coming out later with lots of unreleased material. I'm looking forward to Bloom. And Flying Lotus and Avalanches are supposed to have releases coming out by the end of the year.

I thought Django Django's self titled debut was a very fun album, and it has a very high weighted average here (80/100 with 10 votes) but only one other person besides me has it on a chart. I would recommended it to anybody here.

I definitley think it's gonna pick up. However, I've enjoyed every single album I've heard so far (which is admittedly only 7) maybe it's just a year for small gems?
However we still have: Kanye release(s), Flaming Lips release(s), Sigur Ros, Santigold (which looks to be really good, Tenacious D!!!! (Which I only judt found out ), Frank Ocean's debut, Passion Pit, QOTSA and if we're very lucky: Dre and Avalanches.
I think we'll have our jaw-dropper (MBDTF wasn't even until the last quarter of 2010 so...

I'm really excited for the Dirty Projectors' release in July, they have a lot of potential.
