The Grateful Dead are best represented on their Live Dead album and were not essentially a studio band. This album is pretty much standardized country bordering on kitsch. It certainly lacks imagination and verve. This is little more than background elevator music and all a bit pointless.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I love this album. Songs like "Box of Rain," "Friend of the Devil" and "Ripple" are undeniable classics. And that's not even all of the classics. There might be one or two tracks that could be considered filler, but the grand majority of this album is great tunes.

It may be produced to sound like it's bordering on kitsch, and it's undeniable that they excelled in a live surrounding, but I personally feel the quality of the songs alone make this a great album. As a band, you have to draw your live material from somewhere, and there has rarely been a better selection of songs to add to your repertoire than those found on 'American Beauty'. I feel that the production allows the songs to prove themselves. The Dead live is a different proposition, whereby you can listen to a great show and go, "what a great band", but this album, with it's straightforward country sound, showcases great songs. I'd also argue that no music is "pointless". Music may be aimless, meandering, or simply mean very little to you. But never is it "pointless".
