So the writers for Mojo magazine apparently made a list of the 50 most out-there albums of all time back in 2005. Let's see how it turned out:

The List

Hmm, TMR is THE most out there album ever? I doubt it. It's out there, but I've seen more out there albums than that.

Apparently, Sgt. Pepper is the 14th most out there album of all time. I mean it's hardly even among the 50 most out there albums, and here you find it at #14. The White Album was more out there than Sgt. Pepper.

Loveless should be a bit lower than #18, it's not THAT strange.

There are some glaring omissions: Twin Infinitives and Parable of Arable Land, for example.

These are just some things, will post a more detailed comment later on.

Anyway, your thoughts?

Sgt. Peppers is so out there and inaccessible, it's sold 32 million copies worldwide.

It will certainly be distressing to some to see that The Beatles out out-there'd Frank Zappa...

Yes. VERY experimental album. It's amazing how anyone even understands it. Rolling Eyes

Axis: Bold As Love? Confused ....um....Rock? and Barbara Streisand? Laughing

I'm cool with the rest I guess. 20-25 of them I haven't heard.

Some odd inclusions and glaring omissions. Glad Wild Man Fischer and Bongwater were there. I'd like to have seen albums in the list by the following:

Shockabilly
Ivor Cutler
Ken Nordeen
Cromagnon
Fifty Foot Hose

Interesting, I've got to check out those artists' work.

And yes, it was a flawed list.

I wonder if their list is the most "out there" but also accessible albums? Now that I write that it sounds like an oxymoron in a way. But I agree with Trout Mask Replica, but definitely unsure about Sgt. Peppers'.

I basically looked at this list hoping it would have White Light/White Heat, so I'm satisfied. I haven't heard of most of these albums, though.

Cool

Where is Lee Ranaldo's From Here to Infinity? This is an album made up of noise and drones all on stick grooves. The vinyl is clear so you get mixed up with the tracks on eitherr side when you are trying to place your stylus after you have been listening to the same stick groove for up to 20 minutes. In addition to this, one side has an etched snake eating it's tail. If you accidentally set your stylus down on this, you could have stylus damage.
As a concept, it is certainly out there.
