Since you guys have pretty great music tastes, I was wondering what kind of movies you'd all suggest. I'm not a huge fan of television as I only watch it about 30 minutes to an hour a week, but I want to get into movies.

So suggest some of your favorites!

One of my favorite ever : Amercian Beauty directed by Sam mendes.... a masterpiece !!!

you can start with the "AFI's 100 Years…100 Movies" which is a pretty good list !!

A Woman Under the Influence - John Cassavetes
The Mirror - Andrey Tarkovsky
Gummo - Harmony Korine
What Time is it There - Tsai Ming-Liang

I also like: Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles, Mike Leigh, Lars von Trier...I'm missing a lot, but that's what comes to mind. I generally detest AFI's lists, but it depends on your taste of course.

Are there any movies that I "absolutely have to watch"? Just wandering because I neglected my movie watching for a few years now. Well I have watched a few newer ones like Cloverfield, The Strangers and The Knowing. Nothing 2009 new but I have heard the essentials from that year being repeated many times.

Anyway, are there any movies that I "absolutely have to watch"?

Nice list Boog. Melville, Jodorwoski, Herzog!

And uh, no. AFI isn't about good taste. Don't get me wrong. Tons of good movies on there, but, it's really an insiders club sort of thing. I count about 5 really good movies in the top 25. And obviously its missing all the lesser known American gems. That's the problem if you follow lists like AFI, you get to thinking that cinema is really boring or something.

There's been lots of incredibly surprising films that have come out, frankly I don't think Casablanca, Gone With the Wind or The Wizard of Oz are it. I dunno, I just find lists like that depressing. Knowing you have to wade through that much crap just to get to something like Chinatown.

Where's Nashville? Cassavetes? Buffalo '66? How bout some more Orson Welles? These movies, along with more obscure directors (Jon Jost), are more interesting than most of what's on there. I think the list is more about the movies that made a splash with people, rather than movies of incredible depth, originality or just being incredibly moving. That's what I don't like about the list, it's pretty far from my own taste, which means it's bad taste (to me of course). I mean, I think if you like a film like Gummo, or The Mirror, you might think that there's no other movies out there like that. But there are quite a few of them.

If you didn't catch Gran Torino, definitely pick it up. Just make sure there's only adults present.
