The recent Weezer poll got me thinking about just how much Pinkerton really meant to me as a 13ish year old when I found it, and how much it felt like something that had been made just for me. So my question is, what albums do you think best define the early teenage experience. Which would you give to a 13 year old now, who might just be getting interested in things not on the radio, knowing that it will speak to their blend of angst and confusion, but not going to overwhelm them with snobbery or messages over their head.
My picks would be
Weezer - Pinkerton
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
The Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers
Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin
The Cure - Disintegration - This might be a hard sell now depending on what they grew up with. But what kid couldn't identify with Pictures of You
Nirvana - Nevermind - They're gonna end up listening to it anyway might as well get it over with as soon as possible

Violent Femme's is a big one.
Funeral, The Wall, Marshall Mathers LP, Kid A, American Idiot, Never Mind The Bollocks, Moon & Antarctica...
Fairly mainstream choices....but they're all very 'teenager-y'

My immediate thoughts are Funeral and The Suburbs, since it really captures the essence of the suburban childhood so well.
This isn't an album, but the song "Changes" by David Bowie is a great one for youth.

I would've killed myself if someone had made me listen to Arcade Fire as a 13-year-old. I would personally agree with Nevermind. It's simple enough and rocks hard enough for almost any 13-year-old to get into.

I listened to Funeral when I was nine.....  I'm still alive.

Because it's quiet and slow-paced. I don't know what kind of attention spans the 13-year-olds in your life have, but the ones in mine most likely couldn't even get halfway through Funeral.

When I was 13 I would have been in... 8th grade? I didn't listen to much back then. I can't remember if that was my Kraftwerk phase or my Deep Purple/Black Sabbath phase. Probably somewhere in between.

Hmm that's a tough one, I think there are definitely a number of songs on it that rock enough to keep their attention, I'm just not sure if they would identify with it on a deeper level or not.

Dookie by Green Day is basically an entire album about the trials and tribulations of a small town teen. Impossible to do it any better in my opinion.
