I used to hate this album with a burning passion, but I'm warming up to it with each and every listen
At the moment, I'd give it a 3.5/5

Soundtracks For The Blind by Swans had obviously a huge influence on this album but GY!BE have done a better job imo.
A masterpiece !

I think the soundtracks for the blind comparisons, while kind of accurate, don't fully hold. GY!BE are more focused on sub-classical arrangements, the songs build up differently, and emotionally they have a vague outwards looking apocalyptic/political theme, while Swans are totally introverted, making music concerned with spiritual longing, power dynamics, cryptic sexual imagery and of course lots of depression.
I have not heard all of this but my impression of these guys is that they make music that, while fairly good, is kind of shallow. Sure they aren't as obnoxious as seventies prog, but they make the very prog centric mistake of trying to be classical musicians (strings must mean they are sophisticated though! I'll buy into that!). Their themes are ultimately a tool to sell music (everything sounds vaguely meaningful and sort of political, so people will feel impressed by it, its a mysterious image to buy into), but ultimately they don't have anything to say. The music does not for me personally cut below a surface level. Though the surface level is exquisitely executed.
Slint, Talk Talk, Swans, Corrupted, the Boxhead Ensemble or even Sigur Ros are all more creative arrangement wise, and usually songwriting wise as well. All of them do more unique/powerful things emotionally for me.

F#A# = 90/100 album. Very creative pieces, very moving. Full of emotion, great arrangements.
Lift You Skinny Fists - BLAAAAAAH LAMMMEE. 30/100 yaaawn.
One of the few albums that I honestly don't care if I'm 'missing something', I'm not listening to the entire thing again.

I loved this when I first heard it and it's still a favorite. I'm not sure about the themes as a tool to sell music idea. Whether one believes they are genuine or not I don't think they had much success striking it rich with this approach.

I don't mean to say the music is some only commercial venture or anything. I don't know whats going on in the musician's heads. Perhaps I should backtrack a little, what I think I mean to say is that I feel regardless of what their intention was, that for me their image sometimes overshadows the music.
I'm on the fence about these guys, I feel like part of me wants to like them, but on a whole I don't. They are so close to being good, yet at the same time so far.

I really like this album. It was the first Godspeed album I bought and I loved it immediately. I just though I should add something about the graphical score sheet that comes with the album. I enjoyed trying to follow the score and working out where each section started and finished. _________________ Hey look, there at the back
