//**// 14.04.2009 WE ARE ALREADY VOTING!!! PLEASE, DON'T PROPOSE ANY MORE SONGS, GO TO THE LAST PAGE ON THIS FORUM AND JOIN US WITH YOUR VOTES!! //**//

//*// 03.04.2009 i'm editing this message on april the 3rd so it seems it is confusing people. At this point in time, with this message i was just proposing the contest, so rules weren't settled yet.

The only rule that applies for the contest to get started is this: VOTE AS MANY ARTIST YOU WISH, WITH A LIMIT OF 3 SONGS PER ARTIST".

When we get enough songs to choose the ones voted the most, we'll start our traditionar 'pair-to-pair' competition. //*//

I know this is a "best albums ever" website, but... what about doing a "best song ever" contest here on the forum?

Since there are millions of tunes, trying to start using our traditional "pair by pair elimination series" would be nonsense and infinite, so i would propose to do the following first:

1.- pick the "top-ranked bands" here on this website and go band by band. Pick your 3 fav tunes of that band/artist. Vote for them here on this forum. In my opinion this would give us a quite representative list of tunes to be considered for the tournament.

2.- complete your list with more tunes you like from other bands that you believe they must compete. I´d introduce a limit here of 3 tunes by artist, as before, and say, 50 tunes in total by voter?? just in order to make this list not so long.

3.- summing up all votes in 1. and 2. by all voters within a period of time (we can leave this period of time open so far), choose the best 3 tunes by first 20 bands (3 times 20 bands = 60 tunes), the best 2 tunes by bands from 21 to 100 (2 times 80 bands = 160) and complete the list with the 36 tunes voted the most on step 2.-

This would leave us with 256 best songs to start our "pair by pair" competition as usual.

Do you agree??

I think it might take a very long time to vote on the songs that will contend in the tournament. Can you explain a bit more how you see that playing out? I think it's a great idea.

Yeah. We would have to start out the tourney with...512 songs to make it comprehensive and the bracket easy.

Maxxy: 256 or 512 is up to you people, as you prefer. It was just an idea, and i agree it should be "bracket easy".

Elston: my idea is that trying to make the "start list" freely it would only lead us to people saying lots of songs, arguing one to each other about which songs from the beatles should be considered and which dont, and also probably would lead also to some "important" songs that we could indeed forget to include. So trying to "structure" this start list in a way i think it should help us.

I think the best way to implement this would be letting the next few weeks, say a month, for people to propose their 3 favs from the best 100 bands on "top-rated bands" plus some other songs from other groups they like. You dont need to put all in a message, of course, and if you dont want -or dont feel like trying it- you dont need to propose all 3 songs for all 100 groups.

Just as an example, i would vote on my first message for:

* QUEEN: Bohemian Rhapsody, March of the black queen, Innuendo.
* PINK FLOYD: Shine on you crazy diamond, Comfortably numb, Time
* BLUR: She`s so high, Villa Rosie, No distance left to run

and besides, one vote for the main song from "the good the bad and the ugly" soundtrack and another two for "Laura" and "I dont feel like dancing" from Scissor Sisters (which i think they are not amongst the 100 main bands).

These are just examples, but i could do this, leave my message here, and try some other bands and songs in some future message.

I compromise to count all songs that are voted (if someone wants to help your welcome!!), after some time we can fix the final date to propose songs, count them and start voting.

Ok, seems it could work. I`ve already arranged an excel file to compute all your votes, so we can start when you like.

just 2 more considerations:

- in order not to make this a mess, please DONT CHANGE VOTES!! So please start with those bands you feel more "secure" while others vote for other bands and give you ideas. If you vote for 3 ledzep songs and then someone votes for "inmigrant song" which you didn`t choose and you realize now you want to include it. its going to be tough for me to count your votes.

- it doesn`t matter if the list of 100 "top-ranked bands" change (it probably will). Since you can vote bands out of that chart up to 3 songs as well, it doesnt change anything. The only thing that would change is that at the end we will pick, say, 3 songs from first 20 bands, 2 songs from bands to 21 to 100, and the 50 song voted the most from bands out of "top-ranked" list, so we can fix the final date to count votes and using the chart at that day for this purpose.

Hence, i think we can wait until next week to start, in order to let more people read this topic. There`s only one thing we must decide and it is whether you prefer 256 songs to start voting or 512 as Maxxy said (or even more??)

See you on monday.

OK, let's start.

THESE ARE THE RULES:

* PREVIOUS (FIRST) ROUND:
- Name your favourite songs, up to 3 songs by the same band/artist.
- Please vote the songs from the same band on the same message, and please dont change your votes later on.
- First round will be open for several weeks, so you may vote on different messages, dont need to write an enormous lenght message here...
- You may focus attention on bands amongst 100 bands on "top-ranked bands" list on this website, due to rules of selection explained later on. Anyway you dont need to vote all 3 songs from all 100 groups there or any other group.

* SELECTION RULES:
- In order to get a "bracket easy" number of 512 songs for the final round, these are the selection rules:
- 5 songs voted the most from each band on top20 of "top-ranked bands" here on this website.
- 4 songs from bands ranked from 21 to 50.
- 3 songs from bands ranked from 51 to 100.
- plus, the 142 songs voted the most from bands out of "top-ranked bands" on this website.
- If more songs are needed to be included (whenever a band on "top-ranked" list doesnt get the 3/4/5 songs allowed), we'll add song number 143, 144, and so on.
- All "even" results will be solved on a "break-even" round at the end of round one.
- "Top-ranked bands" list for this purpose will be considered as the list on this website the day we decide to stop this first round.

* FINAL ROUND.
- The 512 songs selected, by usual "pair to pair" selection process.
- We may discuss how to pair them later on.

Any other rules we may find necessary to proceed will be decided by all who engage this tournament.

Hey ho, let's go!!
