- Post subject: Hello from Electronica fan!
|
Hi everyone! I've been using this site for recommendations for a while, but just got around to creating an account here. I like this site a lot and there seems to be a good correlation with high-ranking albums (in charts like "Best Albums of 2011") and my own taste.
A bit about me: I like many different genres of music (was a hard core euro new wave fan in the late 80's, then turned to Pink Floyd and indie rock, then started listening to just about anything that's non-mainstream, although, ironically, my favorite band of all times is Radiohead, which has become pretty mainstream).
Anyway, my favorite genre these days is electronica, and this is where following the all-around charts doesn't always reveal great bands. Example: I am a huge Junior Boys fan, but their great album "So this is goodbye" is only ranked #152 in the 2006 list; moreover it's only included in four charts, all of which are user-generated on this site (not that there is anything wrong with user charts, but it's frustrating no "elite" reviewer picked it up).
So: how should I go about finding good non-mainstream electronica albums? Guess I need to find users with tastes similar to mine, then follow their recommendations?
Cheers,
Andrash

Welcome to BEA! Once you have created a chart, it will be easier to find users with a similar taste through the album ratings, and also a site generated similar charts function which displays the five most similar lists to yours.
I'm looking forward to seeing your chart

Joyofdivision, so glad you replied, as I have previously checked out and loved your charts. We seem to have incredibly similar tastes (I hope you like Junior Boys ). You seem to be one of the few múm fans around here, which is another band I adore.
Will post a chart soon!

I'm a fan of múm's early stuff. I think "Yesterday was dramatic - today is OK" is especially good. But.. their creativity seems to have withered a bit over the years IMO.
Liars could be another one of those under-appreciated bands on this site. You might like their new album, "WIXIW". Apart form their other albums, they took a bit of an electronic route on this one, and many compare it to Radiohead's style. My favorite from them, though, is "Drum's Not Dead".

Welcome to BEA, Andrash! I've found this site very useful for recommendations. As joyofdivision said, the "similar charts" function may help you in finding users with similar tastes, and they could recommend you some albums. As for mum and Junior Boys, I've listened to mum's first two albums and I liked both of them, and I listened to a few tracks from "So This is Goodbye" a long time ago. I think I liked them. I've been meaning to listen to the whole album, though. And I only really like three of Radiohead's albums (OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac). The rest range from decent, but not that special (The Bends) to simply unsatisfying (all post-Amnesiac albums) to mediocre (Pablo Honey).
The charts which are not user-generated often exclude some great albums which you'll find only on user charts, simply because these albums haven't got that popular yet.

Agreed. The only albums I've heard in complete are the first two, but I've heard a few tracks from the others and they don't seem as good.
Liars is a great band, you can't go wrong with their first four albums. After that, I haven't heard anything, though.

I disagree with the bold. I think I love In Rainbows a little too much.
And another (underrated) electronic recommendation: Juana Molina

Ahh, In Rainbows is alright, but I think it's very much overrated.
Juana Molina is awesome

It took me three months, but it's finally ready! My first chart is posted, and it includes quite a few not-so-common bands and albums. Check it out and let me know what you think!
