ARETHA FRANKLIN (coach: Bork)

"I sing to the realists; people who accept it like it is."

vs.

KIM DEAL (coach: CellarDoor)

"When the band begins to get a name for themselves, and the writers get assigned to bands, they'll hit somebody who just doesn't like that kind of music, or they love hip hop but hate guitar rock."

I feel Aretha Franklin is a bit overrated. She has a great voice, but never really did enough with it. She only released a handful of songs that are memorable. Kim Deal has played on more amazing albums than Aretha Franklin has decent songs.

Yeah, that probably won't be a very popular opinion.

OK, I'm going to list GREAT Aretha songs off the top of my head. Not decent, truly great. Here goes:

Say A Little Prayer
Call Me
Respect
Think
I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)
Since You've Been Gone
Chain of Fools
Do Right Woman, Do Right Man
Day Dreaming
Until You Come Back To Me
Share Your Love With Me
Baby I Love You
Runnin' Out of Fools
Cry Like A Baby
Ain't No Way
You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman

That's off the top of my head. There are tons more. I have no problem with people enjoying Kim Deal's music more than Aretha's. I often do. But to say she has appeared on more great albums than Aretha has decent songs is not just a controversial opinion, it's wrong.

I just went through and listened to those on Spotify. There were a few I'd forgotten about, like "Ain't No Way" and "Call Me." About half of those songs do nothing for me at all, but there are enough good ones for me to change my mind about what I said. It's really not by much, though.
