All the announcements during the World Cup in South Africa were in French too. Whilst I don't doubt your reasoning, I think it's more likely that, traditionally, French is seen as a fairly universal language.

Okay Mandarin obviously not spoken as widely as French, Still why not in, Spanish, Portuguese, English, Arabic, Japanese or German. All of which are spoken more than French (There are probably others). Just saying if French is seen as such a universal language, perhaps that is a slightly outdated view?

French is the language of the IOC because of Coubertin like Cartoken says. It's true that French was for some time the international language and it's still on our passports. _________________ Shut up mate you're boring!

Yeah, it's a hugely outdated view, but they did colonise large swathes of Africa and it's likely that, at the turn of the last century, a lot of intellectuals in England, America and continental Europe spoke French as a second language.
But as you rightly say, it's pretty outdated.
