- Post subject: A magic and sublime album from 2011
|
Today I discovered a fantastic album, one which can only be described as magical and a truly great listening experience. It felt like a journey, a dream into a world where there was nothing to do but listen. Breathing like trees in a sublime wind as days pass them by. Ethereal in nature and a COMPLETE BREATH OF FRESH AIR FROM EVERYTHING ELSE THAT YEAR!
My greatest for 2011 before today was Kasabian, Destroyer, Deaf Havana etc. The first two get boring after repeated listens and Deaf Havana's greatness comes from the songwriting which is formulaic but great so it levels off... sort of. Rarely goes places I haven't been before. Pains of Being Pure At Heart and Yuck albums were great too. I suppose both could be rated higher on the chart. None of them come close on first listen to the album I heard today though. None of them took me to the places that album took me today.
I'm not going to say another word about it though. Listen for yourself. The album is called 'The Magic Place' by a person named 'Julianna Barwick'.

Yep, it's a beautiful piece of art. Though it misses my top 5 for 2011.

I have two albums in your top 5 of 2011 I haven't listened to. They are the 'Matana Roberts' album and the 'Neon Indian' one. Do they sound like this album or other albums I like?

mmmmmm, I couldn't guarantee either. I mean you like Julianna Barwick so I'm not gonna pigeonhole what you like but I really don't know Neon Indian is very much my style - electronica/shoegaze and Matana is....some crazy whacked out jazz. So...yeah...not sure . Would love to hear your thoughts on both though.

A great album. You might want to try 'Tragedy' by Julia Holter.

Saw Julia Holter one very early morning on a Danish festival, in a "closed" tent with great acoustics. Best start of a day I remember.
