Yeah. Great band. The Charm of the Highway Strip is another album by them that I would recommend.
As for this album, 90/100
Like, obviously it's too long and stuff, but it's part of the appeal.
I also think that either this, or Have One On Me are the most expensive CD's in history The last time I saw this in an HMV it was $70 _________________ Submit Your List for BEA's 2023 Film Poll!
First off, the notion that this is "typical indie pop" is ludicrous (I read that comment from someone one time). It's incredibly eclectic going through at least 10 different genres. Granted it's Stephen Merritt's interpretation of those genres, which might not be 100% authentic, but that's what makes it wonderfully unique. It does have its flaws: It's too long, it does it have its share of filler tracks, but it also is a tour de force of outstanding songwriting, and Stephin Merritt is one of a kind when it comes to crafting catchy melodies and writing lyrics and stories like nobody else. He's sort of like a musical Coen Brothers... You know, quirky, but there's heart and soul there too. Do what the booklet says: Get the whole thing and then make a mix of your favorite songs.
Best track: Papa Was a Rodeo..... No, wait! The Book of Love... No, wait! I Don't Want to Get Over You, No, wait! Yeah, oh Yeah!... All my Little Words?...? (You get the idea)
It is long, but listening to individual tracks kind of ruins the whole experience. When you've got time to listen to it all it's definitely worth it.
You know, as much as I love it, I would say you need a fair amount of patience to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. It's a concept album, but I don't think it was intended to be listened to in order, necessarily.
Actually, if I had pick one best track, it would be, Papa Was a Rodeo. It's a hilarious country song parody!
I'm curious: Fans of this album, what's your favorite song on it?
own it, but never listened to it alone. I always throw it in a mix with some Belle & Sebastian, acoustic Young, and select Pavement and Built to Spill. I wouldn't say it's great, but it's interesting.
